High-Level Design (HLD) Mock Interview / System Design Session

This is a realistic High-Level Design (HLD) mock interview designed to simulate actual system design interviews and evaluate your ability to think through scalable architectures, trade-offs, and system-level decisions under time constraints.

Format

1. 45 mins: Live system design discussion
2. 15 mins: Detailed feedback + Q&A

What to expect

1. Open-ended system design problems based on real-world applications
2. Focus on how you approach ambiguity and structure large-scale systems
3. Discussion around scalability, reliability, and trade-offs rather than coding
4. Slightly challenging prompts to simulate real interview pressure

Concepts covered

1. Requirement gathering & clarification
2. System architecture design
3. Scalability and load handling
4. Database design (SQL vs NoSQL trade-offs)
5. Caching strategies
6. Load balancing & partitioning
7. API design
8. Consistency, availability, and reliability trade-offs
9. Real-world production considerations

What’s expected from you

1. Ask clarifying questions before jumping into design
2. Break down the problem into components and services
3. Think aloud and communicate trade-offs clearly
4. Design systems that are realistic, not over-engineered
5. Be prepared to sketch or share diagrams during the session

Setup requirement

Please ensure you have a whiteboard tool ready (such as excalidraw) so we can visually map out system components during the session.

Note on scheduling

On Topmate, I try to limit my calendar to one session per day, which is why the visible timing is set to 10 PM – 11 PM EDT.
