Frequently asked questions
How to prepare for a job interview as a software engineer?
Build your plan around the rounds you will actually face: DSA/coding, system design or LLD depending on seniority, and behavioral. Fix a daily coding routine on practice platforms, revise core CS fundamentals, prepare 5–6 structured project stories for behavioral rounds, and reserve the final weeks for mock interviews under real time pressure. Most candidates lose offers not because of weak knowledge but because they never rehearsed the actual interview format.
How to prepare for a system design interview?
Learn the core building blocks first — load balancers, caching, SQL vs NoSQL, sharding, replication, message queues — then work through classic problems like URL shortener, rate limiter, chat app, and news feed. Practise the full flow out loud: requirement clarification, capacity estimation, high-level diagram, deep dives, and trade-offs. Reading passively is not enough; this round rewards candidates who have presented designs and handled follow-up questions before.
How to approach a system design interview once the problem is given?
Spend the first few minutes clarifying requirements and scale instead of jumping to a solution — interviewers are evaluating how you handle ambiguity. Give a high-level design covering the main components, then deep-dive into one or two critical parts such as data storage or the hot path, stating trade-offs as you go. If time remains, discuss bottlenecks and how you would extend the design.
What is a system design interview and why do companies conduct it?
It is a round where you architect a large-scale system such as a chat app, payment gateway, or video platform while explaining every decision to the interviewer. Companies use it to test whether you can think in terms of scale, trade-offs, and real-world constraints rather than just code. For mid-level and senior software engineer roles at product companies in India, it is usually the main elimination filter.
What are system design interview questions that get asked most often?
The most common prompts include designing a URL shortener, a WhatsApp-style chat app, an Instagram or Twitter feed, Uber, BookMyShow, a rate limiter, a notification system, and a file storage service like Dropbox. The exact question matters less than the framework — requirements, estimation, high-level design, deep dive, bottlenecks — because interviewers frequently twist a known problem to test adaptability.
What is Grokking the System Design Interview?
It is a well-known online course that teaches system design through step-by-step solutions to common interview problems, which is why it appears in almost every prep discussion. It is useful for building vocabulary and seeing how standard problems are broken down, but on its own it will not get you through the round — you still need to practise designing and defending systems yourself.
Is System Design Interview by Alex Xu enough to clear the design round?
The two volumes are among the most recommended books because they walk through complete solutions with a repeatable framework. For entry and mid-level interviews, they cover a large part of what gets asked. For senior roles or companies with a high design bar, pair the book with live practice — presenting your own designs and getting corrected — since a book cannot simulate cross-questioning.
What is a realistic FAANG interview preparation roadmap for working professionals?
A practical 3–6 month plan: the first 6–8 weeks on DSA patterns (roughly 150–200 quality problems rather than hundreds of random ones), the next 4–6 weeks on system design and LLD basics, behavioral stories prepared in parallel, and the final 4–6 weeks for weekly mock interviews and company-specific research. Adjust the split towards whichever rounds you are weakest in — most candidates under-prepare design and behavioral relative to DSA.
Is FAANG interview preparation for experienced engineers different from what freshers do?
Yes, significantly. The DSA bar does not disappear, but experienced candidates carry extra weight on system design, LLD, deep project grilling, and behavioral or leadership signals. You are also evaluated on role and compensation fit, so understanding offer negotiation matters more than it does at fresher level. Preparing like a fresher — only grinding LeetCode — is the most common reason experienced candidates stall.
How should someone from a service-based company start FAANG interview preparation in India?
Treat it as a skills-bridge problem rather than a background problem. Start DSA from scratch if needed, study how product-scale systems work since service projects rarely expose you to them, rewrite your resume around impact instead of tech-stack lists, and validate readiness with mock interviews that mirror product-company formats. People make this switch to FAANG in India regularly; what separates them is consistency over 6–12 months, not pedigree.
Is joining a FAANG interview preparation course worth it, or is self-study enough?
It depends on how much structure you need. If you already follow a disciplined plan with practice problems, books, and design study, a course adds little beyond accountability. Where candidates genuinely struggle is realistic practice with feedback, so whatever route you pick, make sure the plan includes mock interviews with an experienced interviewer — that part cannot be replaced by passive content.
Are mock interviews for software engineer freshers really useful?
Very much so. For freshers the biggest gaps are usually interview-day nerves, thinking aloud, and structuring answers — not lack of knowledge. A mock recreates the real time pressure and shows you what happens when you get stuck, which college placements rarely simulate. Even three to five mocks before the hiring season typically makes answers noticeably sharper.
Is an AI mock interview for software engineers as effective as practicing with a human interviewer?
AI tools are good for high-volume, low-cost repetition — timed coding drills or rehearsing your stories on camera. What they cannot yet replicate is a human interviewer's follow-up probing, silences, hints, and nuanced feedback on communication. Use AI for daily practice, but keep a few human-led mocks closer to the real interview so the actual day does not feel unfamiliar.
Is a mock behavioral interview for software engineers necessary if I have already prepared my stories?
Preparing STAR stories is step one, but most candidates ramble, overshare, or miss what the interviewer was actually probing for. A mock behavioral round gives you outside feedback on structure, length, and whether your examples genuinely signal the quality being tested. It matters even more for leadership-principles-heavy rounds like Amazon's, where vague stories get exposed quickly.
Is a mock interview for senior software engineers different from a fresher-level mock?
Yes — a senior-level mock should weight system design depth, LLD, API design, and deep project cross-questioning far more than a fresher-level coding mock, along with a stricter behavioral bar. If you are interviewing at a senior bar but have only practised DSA rounds, you are preparing for the wrong interview. Make sure the person conducting the mock actually interviews at the senior level you are targeting.
