Cloud migration is a complex process, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. The "6 Rs" framework offers a clear and practical approach to navigating your journey, helping you choose the right strategy for your specific needs.

1. Rehost (Lift and Shift):

  • This is the simplest approach, where you "lift" your existing applications and servers from on-premises infrastructure and "shift" them to the cloud without any major changes.
  • Benefits: Easy and fast, minimal downtime, good for basic needs.
  • Drawbacks: Doesn't leverage full cloud benefits, potential lock-in with specific cloud provider.

2. Replatform (Lift, Tinker, and Shift):

  • Similar to rehosting, but involves making minor modifications to your applications to optimize them for the cloud environment (e.g., using managed databases).
  • Benefits: Improves performance and scalability, some cloud benefits realized.
  • Drawbacks: Still not fully utilizing cloud's potential, some development effort required.

3. Repurchase (Drop and Shop):

  • Instead of migrating existing applications, you "drop" them and move to a cloud-native Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution that offers similar functionality.
  • Benefits: Can be faster and cheaper, eliminates maintenance burden, leverages vendor expertise.
  • Drawbacks: Might lose customization and control, vendor lock-in, potential data migration challenges.

4. Re-factor (Transform and Optimize):

  • This more in-depth approach involves significantly re-architecting your applications to fully leverage the cloud's capabilities (e.g., microservices, serverless).
  • Benefits: Maximum performance, scalability, and agility, fully utilizes cloud benefits.
  • Drawbacks: Requires significant development effort, potentially disruptive to existing workflows.

5. Retire (Sunset and Archive):

  • Not all applications need to migrate. If an application is outdated or no longer critical, you can "retire" it by sunsetting and archiving its data.
  • Benefits: Reduces costs and complexity, frees up resources.
  • Drawbacks: Requires careful assessment of application value and data retention needs.

6. Retain (Keep it on-premises):

  • Not everything needs to be in the cloud. Certain applications with sensitive data, security requirements, or tight integration with legacy systems might be better kept on-premises.
  • Benefits: Maintains control and security, avoids potential cloud migration challenges.
  • Drawbacks: Misses out on cloud benefits, potential for higher costs and complexity in the long run.
