Supervision exists for two reasons:

  1. to protect clients, and
  2. to improve the ability of counsellors to provide value to their clients.

Supervision is an important aspect of counselling that involves a neutral third party in the work between the counsellor and client. It helps to minimize the risk of serious errors and omissions and encourages the counsellor to reflect on their own feelings, thoughts, behavior, and general approach with respect to the client. Reflecting on their interaction with clients, gaining insights from another counsellor's perspective, and improving the value they provide to their clients are some of the benefits that counsellors can gain from this process.
