Frequently asked questions
What is the ISB YLP program?
The ISB YLP (Young Leaders Programme) is ISB's deferred admission route to its flagship PGP — the one-year, MBA-equivalent Post Graduate Programme in Management. You apply while still in the pre-final or final year of college, and if selected across the evaluation stages, your PGP admission stands confirmed in advance. You then join the PGP batch after completing the stipulated period of full-time work experience, building your profile in the years in between. It is designed for students who are serious about pursuing an MBA early in their careers.
How to get into ISB YLP?
Selection into the ISB YLP is profile-driven rather than dependent on a single number. A strong candidature typically combines consistently good academics, genuine achievements with measurable impact — in academics, sports, entrepreneurship, social initiatives or campus leadership — clear career goals reflected in your essays, and a competitive GMAT or GRE score at the second stage. Since you can apply in the pre-final year itself, starting early gives you an extra attempt and more time to strengthen weaker areas of your profile before the interview.
How to apply for ISB YLP?
You apply online through the official ISB website during one of the announced application cycles. The evaluation happens in three stages: Stage 1 involves the application form, academic details and essays, with no GMAT required at this point; Stage 2 is for shortlisted candidates, who submit a valid GMAT or GRE score along with additional essays; Stage 3 is the personal interview. Those who clear all three stages receive a deferred PGP admit, to be used after the required work experience. It also helps to get your essays and stage-wise strategy reviewed by someone who has actually been through the YLP journey.
What is the ISB YLP eligibility?
ISB YLP eligibility is aimed at students in the pre-final or final year of their bachelor's degree, across all streams, along with students of certain postgraduate programmes. There is no work-experience requirement to apply — the program works in the reverse of a regular MBA application: you secure the admit first and then accumulate roughly two years of full-time work experience before joining the PGP. Since eligible programmes and year-of-study criteria are updated every admission cycle, confirm the current requirements on the official ISB admissions page before applying.
What is a good ISB YLP GMAT score?
There is no officially fixed minimum ISB YLP GMAT score, as the profile is evaluated as a whole. That said, the ISB PGP class carries a strong GMAT average, so a score comfortably above that level — roughly 700+ on the older scale, or the broadly equivalent 655+ on the GMAT Focus Edition — keeps you competitive. Since the GMAT is only needed at Stage 2, you get extra time to prepare after submitting Stage 1. Keep in mind that a high score supports your application but cannot replace strong essays, academics and achievements.
Is there an ISB YLP CAT cut off?
No. There is no ISB YLP CAT cut off because ISB does not accept CAT scores for the YLP or the PGP — the only accepted tests are the GMAT and the GRE. The confusion is understandable, since most other top Indian B-schools, such as the IIMs, shortlist candidates on CAT. If ISB is your target school, plan for the GMAT or GRE right from the start instead of waiting for a CAT score that the program will not consider.
What are the ISB YLP fees?
The YLP does not have a separate tuition of its own. A nominal application fee may apply when you apply, as with most B-school applications. After selection, admits pay a one-time admission fee to confirm the deferred seat, which is generally adjusted against the total program cost. The main component — the standard ISB PGP tuition, the same as for the regular batch — is paid only when you actually join after your work experience. Since figures are revised periodically, check the current fee structure and scholarship or financial-aid options on the official ISB website.
What is the ISB YLP average package?
There is no separate ISB YLP average package, because YLP students join the regular ISB PGP class and go through placements as part of that batch. ISB YLP placements therefore mirror the overall PGP placement report — consistently among the strongest in India, with consulting, product management and finance typically the top hiring sectors. If you are comparing outcomes, look at the latest official ISB PGP placement report rather than a YLP-specific number, since the cohort, roles and outcomes are identical.
Is ISB YLP worth it?
For students who are reasonably sure about doing an MBA, yes — the biggest advantage is finishing the admission process from college itself. You get early mentorship from ISB, can build work experience deliberately instead of juggling applications with a full-time job, and eventually graduate from the same PGP with the same placements and alumni network as the regular batch. The trade-off is commitment: you lock in your B-school choice quite early, before knowing how your career or preferences evolve. If you are unsure about management education itself, compare carefully against applying after three to four years of work experience with a stronger profile.
How to start GMAT preparation from scratch?
Begin by understanding the exam format — the GMAT Focus Edition tests Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. Next, take one full-length diagnostic mock to establish your baseline. Then build a three to four month plan at 10-15 hours a week: strengthen quant fundamentals and verbal concepts first, move to sectional practice while maintaining an error log, and take a full mock every week in the final month, analysing every mistake. Use official questions for practice wherever possible. The most common beginner mistake is collecting resources instead of completing one focused plan.
Which GMAT preparation books should I use?
Start with the GMAT Official Guide along with the official quant and verbal review books, since they contain real retired exam questions. Add Manhattan Prep strategy guides if you want deeper concept explanations, and use GMAT Club for free practice questions with detailed solution discussions. Save the official mock tests for the final phase to simulate the real exam. When it comes to GMAT preparation books, a small set revised thoroughly beats a large collection used superficially — most of your score improvement will come from reviewing errors, not from adding more material.
How much GMAT preparation time is enough?
Most test-takers need two to four months of GMAT preparation time at 10-15 hours per week — roughly 150-200 hours in total. Working professionals often need four to six months, while freshers with strong quant basics sometimes finish sooner. What matters more than duration is consistency: schedule the exam only after you are repeatedly hitting your target score in mocks, and keep buffer for one retake. Also work backwards from your application deadlines — for example, a YLP applicant should have the score ready well before the Stage 2 submission window.
Is GMAT coaching necessary, or is GMAT preparation online enough?
It depends on your baseline score, discipline and budget. GMAT coaching helps if you need structure, fixed schedules, accountability and doubt-solving — especially if you have been away from maths for a few years. GMAT preparation online through self-paced courses, official practice material and forums like GMAT Club is usually enough for self-driven test-takers and costs significantly less. A practical way to decide: take a diagnostic test, measure the gap to your target score, and opt for coaching only if the gap is large or your self-study keeps stalling.
What is the MBA admission process in India?
The MBA admission process in India broadly has five steps. First, choose your entrance route — CAT for the IIMs and most two-year programs, GMAT for ISB and one-year or global MBAs, plus XAT, NMAT or SNAP for specific institutes. Second, submit applications with your score, academics, work experience and essays or SOPs. Third, get shortlisted on your overall profile. Fourth, clear the WAT/GD and personal interview rounds. Finally, accept the offer. In practice, understanding how to get MBA admission means preparing the exam and the profile in parallel, since essays, recommendations and interviews carry significant weight at the top schools.
When should I start preparing for MBA admissions 2026?
Work backwards from the cycle. Entrance exams come first — CAT is held once a year, usually in November, while the GMAT is available round the year — and applications for most top Indian schools open in autumn and close by spring, with classes beginning mid-year. So if MBA admissions 2026 is your target intake, your exam score and profile should ideally be ready before the application windows open. If you are starting late, it is smarter to target the next cycle and use the extra time to build your score and work experience. Final-year students can also explore deferred-entry routes like the ISB YLP to secure a seat early.
