To improve, read dense non-fiction daily, practice previous CAT RC sets, and eliminate options based on what the passage actually says instead of outside knowledge.

A CAT mock test is a full-length practice exam that simulates the actual CAT — the same section-wise pattern, 120-minute time limit, on-screen interface, per-section timers and +3/-1 marking. It is taken online on a computer, just like the real exam, and is followed by a percentile estimate based on other test-takers. There are also sectional mocks that test one section at a time. The real purpose of a mock is not just scoring but building stamina, timing strategy and exam temperament.

Sit in a quiet room with only a pen, paper and water, attempt the full 120 minutes in one sitting without breaks, and use an on-screen calculator instead of your phone, just as the real exam allows. Do not stress about the score in your first few attempts — treat them as experiments to discover your natural speed, accuracy and preferred section order. The most important step comes after the test: spend at least two hours reviewing every wrong and guessed answer, and maintain an error log that you revise weekly.

Judge a series on four things: difficulty calibrated close to the actual CAT, percentile based on a large test-taking base, detailed solutions, and analysis tools that show your time-per-question and accuracy by topic. One or two good series with around 25–30 full-length mocks are enough — what matters more than the brand is the analysis you do after each test. Start with sectional mocks, shift to full-length ones weekly about three to four months before the exam, and keep the final week for revision rather than new mocks.

Free mocks are a great starting point — they help you understand the pattern, get comfortable with the interface and get a rough score without spending money. However, their quality and difficulty calibration can vary widely, and they often lack the deep analytics of a proper series. Since cracking CAT depends heavily on analysis, even a free mock is valuable if you review it thoroughly.

CAT question papers from recent years were officially released, and PDFs of these along with older papers are freely available on various exam-prep and coaching websites. The catch is that the actual CAT is computer-based, so use PDFs for question practice but take your full-length mocks online to build real exam stamina and timing.

You don't need to restrict yourself to local coaching institutes. Decide based on three factors: your self-discipline, the quality of faculty actually available in your city, and your budget. For working professionals and students in cities without strong coaching centres, CAT preparation online is usually the better option — it saves commute time, gives access to top faculty and recorded sessions, and mirrors the real exam, which is computer-based anyway. Classroom programs suit those who need a fixed routine and face-to-face peer group, while 1:1 mentoring is a middle path for personalised guidance on strategy and profile.

It depends on your starting point. If your fundamentals in maths and English are weak, or you struggle with consistency, a structured CAT preparation course gives you a timetable, curated material, doubt support and peer competition. If you already have strong academics and a decent mock score early on, self-study with previous papers and mocks may be enough. A good filter: if your mock scores are not improving after 2–3 months of self-study, that is the signal to get structured help — whether a full course or targeted one-on-one mentoring for specific weak areas.

Costs vary widely by format. Full classroom programs at major coaching institutes typically cost around ₹40,000–₹80,000, while online and hybrid courses generally range from ₹10,000–₹40,000. Very important — for the IIMs and most top B-schools in India, CAT is the primary entrance gateway, and your percentile decides whether you get a shortlist at all. That said, admission is a two-stage process: a strong score earns you the interview call, but your academics, work experience and interview performance decide the final convert. Exams like XAT, NMAT, SNAP and CMAT act as alternative routes, so while CAT preparation for MBA is essential if you are targeting the top tier, it is not the only path available.
