Advisor Outreach Journey for MS/PhD

You know you want a research based master’s or PhD, but the whole reaching out to the “advisor” part feels overwhelming. You are not sure how to shortlist professors, how deeply to read their work, what exactly to say in an email, or how and when to follow up without being annoying. You might have a spreadsheet of names, a few half‑written drafts, and a lot of anxiety about doing it “wrong”.​

This session is for students who want end‑to‑end guidance on the advisor outreach journey for MS/PhD: from identifying the right people to contact, to understanding their research, to writing and sending emails with a clear follow‑up strategy.​

In this session, we will:

1. Clarify your goals and constraints (MS vs PhD, country, timelines, research interests).​
2. Break down how to systematically find and shortlist potential advisors whose work genuinely matches your interests.​
3. Show you how to quickly “research a professor”: reading their webpage, papers, and recent work in a practical way.​
4. Draft or refine a personalized cold email template, including how to reference their work, introduce yourself, and show fit.​
5. Plan what to attach or link (CV, thesis, portfolio, GitHub, writing samples) and how much is enough.​
6. Create a simple follow‑up strategy: when to send reminders, when to stop, and how to interpret different responses.​

By the end of the call, you will:

1. How to make a list of advisors and a clear idea of why each one fits you.​
2. Have at least one strong email template you can confidently adapt and send.​
3. Understand how to “research a prof” without spending hours lost in papers.​
4. Know exactly what your next 2–4 weeks of outreach and follow‑ups will look like.
