Sai has a great depth of knowledge about future career paths in the field of science, and what really stands out is how genuinely passionate he is about helping others succeed. He shared not only his expertise in biomedical sciences but also opened up his international network, which I truly appreciate. I was especially looking for guidance on the European funding landscape, and he gave me clear, focused advice that was extremely helpful and practical. What I valued most was the time he invested in understanding my goals and tailoring his suggestions to my specific situation. He didn’t just provide one solution but offered several actionable paths forward, making it easier to plan my next steps with confidence. He also shared useful resources, insights on building strong collaborations, and tips on how to position myself effectively for funding opportunities. His encouragement and willingness to connect me with the right people have made a big difference for me, and I’m very grateful for his support.

About me
With over 7 years of international research experience across globally renowned institutions, I bring both scientific depth and strategic insight to aspiring researchers aiming to build successful careers in India and abroad.
My expertise focuses on cellular disease mechanisms, particularly in neurodegeneration, metabolism, inflammation, and drug discovery. I am passionate about mentoring aspiring scientists across disciplines to identify the right opportunities, craft compelling applications, and build thriving science careers.
I began my academic journey in India, earning B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, where I graduated as a gold medalist. While my alma mater may not feature in conventional global rankings, my career trajectory stands as a testament to what determination, excellence, and strategic planning can achieve regardless of institutional prestige.
At the national level, I cleared the CSIR-UGC NET and GATE exams on my first attempt, securing All-India Ranks of 35 and 524, respectively. I was offered PhD positions at both CDFD and IIT Hyderabad, two of India’s premier bioscience institutes.
On the international front, I was invited to multiple interviews for PhD positions across Europe including the Max Planck PhD programs. I ultimately secured a PhD position at KU Leuven, Belgium, consistently ranked among the world’s top 50 universities and is also Europe’s most innovative university. I navigated the challenges of relocating and building a life abroad independently, forming meaningful personal and professional networks.
During my PhD at KU Leuven, I (co-)authored 9 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters. I also mentored and supervised 3 master students with their thesis, 2 of whom received the "best thesis award" among their peers, who are currently pursuing their PhDs. I was invited to co-ordinate a research topic in Frontiers in Ophthalmology, for which I published an editorial, a rare honor at an early career stage. In recognition of my achievements, I was inducted as a full member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, joining the ranks of over 200 Nobel Laureates, including Albert Einstein and Barbara McClintock.
After completing my PhD, I received postdoctoral offers from labs at KU Leuven, UCSF and the Karolinska Institute. Opting to stay in Europe, I joined the Karolinska Institute, Europe’s top biomedical research center. There, I further honed my skills in independent research and grant writing, successfully raising over €60,000 in research funding. I was featured in a Swedish magazine for this achievement and was also awarded the Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral Fellowship with a perfect evaluation score, becoming the first scientist at Karolinska’s eye hospital to receive this prestigious honor.
These accomplishments reflect not only my scientific expertise but also my ability to mentor and support researchers navigating the competitive world of academia, whether in India or on the global stage.
Personally, I was born and brought up in Hyderabad, India. I love to travel, spend time with family and friends, play basketball and volleyball, and expand my knowledge through podcasts.
