Over the past few months, while preparing for interviews and staying updated with industry trends, I’ve observed some clear shifts in what companies expect from SDETs and QA Automation Engineers. Strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript are now a basic requirement, with coding rounds focusing on data structures and real-world problem-solving. There’s also a heavy emphasis on end-to-end automation skills—deep understanding of tools like Selenium, Playwright, or Cypress, along with building scalable frameworks using design patterns like POM or BDD, is a key differentiator.

API and backend testing experience with tools like REST Assured and Postman has become essential. Employers now expect candidates to handle authentication flows, validate schemas, and ensure proper API coverage. Integration with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI is also considered standard, with an added focus on test orchestration and reporting. Interestingly, AI is starting to make a mark—tools that assist with self-healing scripts, smart test generation, and visual validations (like Testim and Applitools) are becoming more popular.
