About this session

Hands-On Antenna Design with Ansys HFSS

Why This Course?

Learn a practical antenna design workflow—from creating your first HFSS model to interpreting electromagnetic fields, optimizing antenna performance, and exploring arrays and automation.

Across four focused sessions of one hour each, you will connect simulation results to engineering decisions. Understand how geometry, materials, feeds, element spacing, and excitation affect performance, with theory introduced where it supports the design.

Session 1: HFSS Essentials, Waveguides & Field Visualization

Build a rectangular waveguide and learn how to set up, run, and interpret an electromagnetic simulation.

  1. HFSS interface and project setup
  2. 3D geometry creation and material assignment
  3. Boundary conditions, wave ports, modes, and excitations
  4. Solution setup, frequency sweeps, meshing, and convergence
  5. S-parameter interpretation
  6. E-field and H-field magnitude plots, vector plots, and animations

Session 2: Patch Antenna Design & Optimization

Create a microstrip patch antenna from scratch and tune its dimensions to improve its response at a target frequency.

  1. Substrate, ground plane, patch, and feed creation
  2. Air region, radiation boundary, and port setup
  3. Resonant frequency, S11, VSWR, impedance, and bandwidth
  4. Gain, directivity, efficiency, and radiation patterns
  5. Parameterization of patch dimensions and feed position
  6. Parametric sweeps and optimization using Optimetrics

Session 3: Antenna Arrays & MIMO

Explore how multiple antenna elements interact and how spacing and phase influence radiation patterns and coupling.

  1. Array fundamentals and element spacing
  2. Two-element arrays and extension to four-element models
  3. Broadside and end-fire behavior
  4. Beamwidth, sidelobes, and grating lobes
  5. Mutual coupling, S-parameters, and isolation

Session 4: Vivaldi Antennas, Metamaterials & AI-Assisted Design

Explore advanced structures and discover how simulation can support an automated antenna design workflow.

  1. Vivaldi antenna geometry, feed, and wideband design considerations
  2. Split Ring Resonator (SRR) modeling and resonance
  3. Metamaterial concepts and antenna-related applications
  4. Design variables, simulation datasets, and AI/ML surrogate models
  5. Introduction to HFSS scripting
  6. The automation loop: generate, simulate, extract, optimize, and repeat

Tools Used

  1. Ansys HFSS within Ansys Electronics Desktop
  2. Optimetrics for parameter sweeps and optimization
  3. HFSS scripting / PyAEDT—introductory overview
