I booked this call at probably the lowest point of my final year. I'm from a tier-3 college in a small city, nobody in my family or friend circle works in tech, and every "roadmap" I found online felt written for people who already had internships at startups I'd never heard of. I had decent CGPA and could solve medium LeetCode problems, but I genuinely had no idea what I was supposed to be doing differently, and I was starting to believe product companies just weren't meant for people like me. The call completely reframed that. Pranjal didn't hand me a generic list. He asked about my actual projects, my college, my timeline, and then told me honestly which two things were worth my time and which four things I was wasting energy on. Two years ago, I was exactly where you might be right now. Refreshing job boards, half-convinced the people who "made it" were just built different.
They weren't. I grew up in a small town in Jharkhand, with no insider network and no one to tell me which doors to knock on or which advice to ignore. I was one of the confused ones, and I still got there.
I joined Bentley Systems as an intern got promoted to ASE and then Software Engineer I. Not by grinding quietly, but by shipping things people actually use: an NLP-to-SQL tool three teams adopted, a gRPC client that folded three separate tools into one for 1,000+ engineers, and a company-wide Architecture Kata win my CTO called out by name.
Along the way I became a LeetCode Knight (top 5%, 1880+), and I started writing about how systems really work under the hood, like Bloom filters, S3 durability, and device-bound sessions, over at blogs.pranjalkumar.in.
But the real reason I mentor is simpler than any of that. I remember how confusing this whole path felt, and how much a single honest conversation would have saved me. I walked it recently, so my advice hasn't gone stale. I still remember which turns were dead ends and which ones actually mattered.
