About me

I'm a software engineer at Microsoft in the Azure High Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence (Azure HPC/AI) organization. I joined college with no programming experience and have attended school in the United States and India. I have published research on differential privacy and continual learning, worked as a teaching assistant, taught programming to blind and low-vision students, and been in several leadership positions in university. When I joined college with no experience like a lot of us, I was always told that it's the hardest to get your first internship or first job, but finding subsequent opportunities is way easier. I do think this is true, but when I was starting out I thought this advice was pretty useless. How was I supposed to get that first opportunity with no experience? Through trial and error, a LOT of rejections, and mentorship from others, I was able to showcase my skills through whatever experience I did have, which led me to my first internship at UPS, a second at Microsoft, and then a full-time job offer from Microsoft. Along the way, I annoyed those who had walked this path before with a lot of questions (to their credit, they were VERY patient). I asked about how to prepare for interviews, what skills to build, what classes to take, what to do outside of class to learn more, whether to use a cover letter (spoiler alert: I think it's a waste at most companies), and about the various career paths these mentors had taken. I wouldn't have been where I am today without all the support and tough love I received along the way. I'd love to provide the same support to you, and share mistakes I made so you don't make them (smart people learn from their mistakes, smarter people learn from others' mistakes :)) If you have any questions you need to talk to someone about, feel free to reach out.
