Piyali was born and raised in Kolkata, India and completed her legal education at ILS, Pune and Contract Management from IIM, Ahmedabad. She is a multi-talented individual who has been an artist and theatre performer since school. She values living a wholesome and mindful life, which includes being a dog parent, a traveller, and a tech-savvy corporate lawyer specializing in intellectual property, TMT law. Piyali is a thoroughbred in-house counsel with TMT expertise, having worked for major companies such as Airtel, Disney (UTV, Indiagames, Bindass, Star, Fox, Disney+Hotstar, Nat Geo, ESPN cricinfo), Wipro and Zee Turner. She specializes in a range of legal areas, including advertising, anti-piracy, Blockchain, content creation, production and monetisation, commercial licensing, data privacy, E-commerce, NFTs, OTT, platform security, Web3 and civil and criminal litigation management. Additionally, she is well-versed in regulatory compliance, including ASCI, DOT, MIB, NCLT and TRAI. With nearly a decade at Disney India, Piyali has overseen legal requirements in a leadership capacity for multiple business verticals including Sports Digital Platform, Digital Videos and Gaming, TV Channel Distribution, Content (Development, Syndication and Licensing), Movie Marketing and Distribution. She has also advised on key regulation-changing matters, across multiple industries, including Double Consent mechanism for telcos, Cartel matter before MRTP (Competition Commission), DAS implementation, NTO 1 and NTO 2 for TV distribution by TRAI, Intermediary rules implementation under IT Act, Payment gateway under PSSA, Music Royalty collective societies, E-commerce rules, Grievance/Compliance officer requirement for content/gaming across digital, Data Privacy landscape change, and various cross-border regulations. Currently, Piyali practices as a TMT counsel working with various artists, startups, entrepreneurs, and leading media companies across territories, enabling her clients to strategize, transact and comply with all things legal. Driven by her love of the law and passion for production, she helps clients in the creator economy to clearly understand their IP rights and fairly monetize them. Additionally, Piyali works with communities and colleges to close the gap between law and tech. In addition to being a lawyer, she is a Breakthrough Coach with NLP practitioner, Timeline Technology Training and Hypnosis. She enables young students/adults with their life decisions related to career choices, health and relationships. She has been part of theatre for 23 years and counting. She has produced and directed multiple shows (including employee shows for Disney) and some are captured through her Facebook page “Confusion” (chaos is the highest form of order). She uses tools of Theatre, NLP, Breakthrough Coaching and Mindfulness to enable adults and kids to learn various skill sets like confidence, teamwork, flexibility to change, analytical mind and ability to self-reflect, being curious, ability to network, resilience, self-discipline, use and awareness of space, to be in the NOW, vocal dynamics and body language. She also practises various energy related healing modalities including Chakra Balancing, Inner Child Healing, Tarot Card reading, and Mindfulness meditation.
