About me

Hi, I’m Nishtha Kandhari, a Counselling Psychologist trained in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I work closely with young adults and focus on creating a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space where you can truly be yourself and talk openly about what you’re going through. I believe therapy is about feeling heard and understood, so I bring empathy, active listening, and genuine care into every session. My work also involves supporting clients through conflict, emotional challenges, and difficult life situations, always with sensitivity to their unique backgrounds and experiences. I’m deeply committed to continuous learning so I can offer the best support possible. Outside of therapy, I find joy in painting and drawing, and a sense of calm in nature and spending time with animals.

Frequently asked questions

How much does therapy cost in India?

There's no fixed rate — a therapy session in India can cost anywhere from a few hundred rupees to several thousand. The price depends on the therapist's qualifications and experience, the city, the session length, and whether it's online or in person. Many therapists also keep a shorter, lower-priced first call so you can check the fit before committing to full-length sessions.

Is online therapy expensive?

Usually not. Online therapy often costs less than in-person therapy because therapists don't carry clinic overheads and you save travel time and money. You can also keep costs down by starting with a brief discovery call, booking a 15-minute top-up instead of a full session for smaller questions, and choosing multi-session packages, which usually work out cheaper per session.

How can I find affordable online therapy in India?

Finding affordable online therapy in India comes down to comparing per-session rates before booking, since prices vary widely for similar credentials. Look for a low-cost discovery or brief call, use session packages if you plan to continue, and check that the therapist's focus matches what you need — many who work with young adults and students keep entry points budget-friendly. Just make sure a lower price doesn't mean an unqualified counsellor; verify training in approaches like CBT, DBT, or ACT.

Where can I find free online therapy in India?

If you're looking for free online therapy in India, the government's tele-mental-health helpline Tele-MANAS (14416) runs round the clock, and several NGO counselling lines also offer free calls. These are valuable in a crisis or as a first step, but they're usually short-term and you may not speak to the same person twice. If you need ongoing therapy for anxiety, relationships, or long-standing emotional patterns, consistent sessions with the same therapist — even an affordable online one — is what drives most progress.

How do I choose the best online therapy in India?

The best online therapy in India is less about a big brand and more about the right therapist fit. Check that the therapist is a qualified psychologist trained in evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, or ACT, read what clients say about feeling safe and heard, and see whether their focus matches your need — some work mainly with young adults, others with couples. A short discovery call is the fastest way to judge whether their style puts you at ease.

Are online therapy reviews in India reliable?

Online therapy reviews in India are useful if you read them critically. Detailed reviews that describe the experience — "I felt safe", "someone actually listened", "I could see progress" — tell you far more than a vague star rating. Combine the therapist's own profile testimonials with ratings on independent platforms and honest discussions on community forums like Reddit, then use a discovery call to form your own impression, because fit is personal.

What is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-oriented talk therapy built on the idea that thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected. Rather than only exploring the past, CBT focuses on spotting unhelpful thought patterns — catastrophising, self-criticism, mind-reading — and replacing them with balanced thinking and practical coping strategies. It's one of the most researched therapies and is widely used for anxiety, low mood, sleep problems, and everyday stress.

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

You and the therapist work together to map your patterns: what triggers difficult emotions, the automatic thoughts that follow, and how you usually respond. The therapist helps you question distorted thoughts and test new responses through exercises, journaling, and small behavioural experiments between sessions. Because it's structured and skills-based, many people notice practical changes within a handful of sessions and keep using the tools long after therapy ends.

What is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia?

It's a specialised version of CBT, often called CBT-I, that targets the thoughts and habits keeping insomnia alive — racing thoughts at bedtime, irregular sleep schedules, clock-watching, and the fear of "I'll never fall asleep." Techniques like stimulus control, sleep restriction, and restructuring unhelpful beliefs about sleep are used over a limited number of sessions. It's considered a first-line treatment for chronic insomnia, often before sleeping pills.

What are the common cognitive behavioural therapy techniques?

Widely used cognitive behavioural therapy techniques include cognitive restructuring (challenging distorted thoughts), thought records, behavioural activation (scheduling meaningful activities to lift low mood), graded exposure (facing fears step by step), and grounding or relaxation exercises. A good therapist doesn't run these like a checklist — they choose techniques based on what you're working through and adjust as you progress.

How can I find cognitive behavioural therapy near me?

Start with therapists who explicitly list CBT as their approach, then verify their qualifications and client feedback. Keep in mind that a "cognitive behavioural therapy near me" search limits you to your locality — with online CBT, you can work with a trained therapist anywhere in India over video calls, which matters most if CBT specialists are scarce in your city. Either way, a short discovery call quickly tells you whether the therapist's style suits you.

What is couples therapy like?

Both partners meet a trained therapist who acts as a neutral guide, not a judge deciding who's right. Sessions focus on recurring conflicts, communication breakdowns, or trust issues, and the therapist helps you understand each other's perspective and practise healthier ways of responding. The space is structured but conversational, and many couples say the biggest shift is finally feeling heard by each other — not just by the therapist.

Does couples therapy online work as well as in-person sessions?

For most couples, yes — couples therapy online follows the same process as in-person work. Video sessions add practical advantages: both partners can join from wherever they are, you can choose a therapist who genuinely specialises in couples work instead of settling for whoever is nearby, and scheduling consistent sessions is easier. What matters most is the therapist's training in couples work and both partners feeling safe enough to speak openly.

How do I find couples therapy near me?

Look for therapists who specifically mention couples or relationship training, because not every individual therapist sees couples. Check whether they offer an initial discovery call so both partners can assess comfort, and read what other couples say about their experience. If trained couples therapists are limited in your city — whether it's Mumbai, Pune, or a smaller town — online sessions give you access to specialists across India.

What should I do if I need to talk to a therapist urgently in India?

If you're in immediate distress or thinking of harming yourself, contact a crisis service first — Tele-MANAS (14416) is free and available round the clock. For urgent but non-crisis situations, some online therapists keep emergency slots for same-day or quick calls, so check a therapist's profile for an emergency option. Once the immediate moment has passed, a regular session helps you work on what led to the crisis.
