About me

Mitchell Wagner, MSc, is a physician-in-training and biomedical researcher at the University of Alberta with a research focus at the intersection of cardiovascular medicine, transplantation, and organ preservation. He graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta with an Honors degree in Immunology and Infection in 2022 with an additional Certificate in Biomedical Research, afterwards receiving a Master of Science degree in Experimental Surgery in 2024. Currently, Mitchell is an MD-PhD student within the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. Mitchell’s work centers on ex-situ heart perfusion and myocardial preservation, with particular interest in the metabolic, vascular, and inflammatory mechanisms that influence donor heart viability. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading cardiovascular, transplantation, and respiratory medicine journals, and has presented his work at national and international scientific conferences. In addition to laboratory science, Mitchell has extensive experience in clinical research, collaborating across cardiology, radiology, pulmonology, and pediatric subspecialties. His research contributions have been supported by competitive funding and prestigious personnel awards from organizations including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Canadian Blood Services. Outside of research, Mitchell has held leadership roles in patient advisory councils and health system quality improvement initiatives, reflecting a long-standing dedication to improving healthcare delivery through collaboration with patients, families, and clinicians.
