Frequently asked questions

What is an anxiety therapist, and when should you see one?

An anxiety therapist is a mental health professional trained to help you understand and manage persistent worry, panic, racing thoughts, and the physical symptoms of anxiety. In India, this is usually a counselling psychologist or clinical psychologist with a Masters degree in Psychology and training in evidence-based methods like CBT. Consider seeing one if anxiety is affecting your sleep, focus, work, relationships, or daily routine, or if constant overthinking is leaving you exhausted. Getting help early usually makes recovery faster and stops anxiety from becoming more deeply rooted.

How to get therapy for anxiety in India?

Start by shortlisting qualified therapists — most now offer online sessions, so you are not limited to your own city. Check their qualifications, their focus areas (anxiety, stress, overthinking), and client reviews. Book an introductory or discovery call first to see if you feel comfortable, and then commit to regular sessions, since consistency is what drives results. If budget is a concern, look for therapists who offer pocket-friendly sessions or a package of 3 sessions, which lowers the per-session cost.

How much does anxiety therapy cost in India?

Private therapy in India generally ranges from a few hundred rupees to around ₹2,000–₹3,000 per session, depending on the therapist's qualifications, experience, and session length. Online therapy is usually more affordable than in-clinic sessions in metro cities. Many therapists also keep pocket-friendly slots, and 3-session packages typically cost less per session than booking one at a time. If a fee feels out of reach, it is completely acceptable to ask a therapist whether they have lower-cost options.

What happens in an anxiety therapy session?

The first session is usually about understanding your history, triggers, and how anxiety shows up in your daily life — many therapists keep this initial session shorter for exactly this reason. In later sessions, you work together to identify anxious thought patterns, understand what keeps the anxiety going, and learn practical coping skills like grounding, breathing exercises, and challenging catastrophic thoughts. You may get small things to practice between sessions. Everything discussed is confidential, and a good therapist moves at a pace you are comfortable with.

What anxiety therapy techniques are commonly used?

The most widely used techniques include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps you spot and reframe anxious thoughts; gradual exposure to feared situations; mindfulness and grounding exercises to calm the body; and emotional regulation skills for physical symptoms like a racing heart. Many therapists follow an eclectic approach, combining methods from evidence-based therapies to suit the individual rather than applying one rigid technique. Lifestyle factors like sleep, caffeine, and work stress are usually part of the conversation too.

What is anxiety exposure therapy, and does it work?

Exposure therapy is a structured technique where, with your therapist's support, you gradually and safely face the situations, thoughts, or sensations you fear instead of avoiding them. Over repeated steps, your brain relearns that these situations are not actually dangerous, and the anxiety response reduces. It is considered one of the most effective approaches for panic attacks, phobias, and social anxiety. It is always done at a pace you agree to, so it feels challenging but manageable, never forced.

Does anxiety therapy online really work?

Yes. Online therapy has been shown to work as effectively as in-person therapy for anxiety and related concerns, especially when the approach is structured and evidence-based. Online therapy in India has also made it far easier to find a qualified therapist regardless of your city, attend sessions from home, and stay consistent despite a busy schedule. What matters most is the therapist's qualification and how comfortable you feel with them, not whether you meet in a room or on a video call. Just ensure you choose a licensed professional and have a private space with a stable internet connection.

Is it better to look for anxiety therapy near me, or can I do anxiety therapy at home?

Both options work, so it comes down to your comfort. Searching for anxiety therapy near me makes sense if you strongly prefer face-to-face sessions or have severe symptoms that need in-person care. But doing anxiety therapy at home through online sessions is equally effective for most concerns and has real advantages — no commute, flexible timings, a much wider choice of therapists, and the ease of opening up from a familiar space. If you are unsure, start online and switch later if needed.

Can I get anxiety therapy in Hindi?

Yes. Many therapists in India offer sessions in Hindi and regional languages, and talking in your most comfortable language often helps you open up faster. Counselling psychologist Minakshy Iyer, for example, offers online therapy in English, Hindi, and Tamil. Language comfort is a completely valid filter when choosing a therapist — therapy works best when you can describe your feelings exactly the way you experience them.

What is the best online therapy for anxiety in India?

There is no single "best" option for everyone. The right choice is a therapist who is properly qualified (a Masters in Psychology at minimum), has specific experience with anxiety, speaks your preferred language, and charges within your budget. Look for transparent pricing, the option of a discovery or short first session before committing, and clear confidentiality practices. A therapist's profile and client reviews will tell you far more than app rankings — and someone who focuses on anxiety, stress, and overthinking will usually serve you better than a generalist.

Is free online therapy worth it, or should I pay for online therapy under ₹500?

Free options — government helplines like Tele-MANAS, NGO-run services, and peer support groups — are valuable in a crisis or when you cannot afford anything at all, but they are usually short-term and not a substitute for consistent sessions with the same therapist. If you can spend a little, several therapists in India offer online therapy under ₹500 through pocket-friendly or sliding-scale slots, and 3-session packages bring the per-session cost down further. A practical approach is to use free helplines for immediate support and start affordable regular therapy for long-term progress.

What is the meaning of grief counseling?

Grief counseling is professional support that helps you process the pain of losing someone or something important — through death, a breakup, divorce, job loss, or any major life change. It is not about "getting over" your loss or being told how to feel. A grief counselor provides a safe, non-judgmental space to express emotions like sadness, guilt, anger, or numbness, make sense of what happened, and slowly rebuild your routine and sense of self while still honoring what you lost.

What is grief counseling like?

Grief counseling feels like a calm, unhurried conversation where you can talk about your loss as much or as little as you want — there is no pressure to "stay strong" or move on by a deadline. The counselor listens, validates what you are feeling, and helps you carry the grief rather than fight it. Common grief counseling techniques include talking through the story of your loss, memory and meaning work, journaling, personal rituals, and practical strategies for particularly difficult days like anniversaries or birthdays.

What is the difference between grief counseling and grief therapy?

Grief counseling supports people going through the natural grieving process — it offers empathy, coping tools, and help adjusting to life after a loss. Grief therapy goes deeper and is meant for grief that has become complicated or prolonged, such as when a loss leads to severe depression, trauma symptoms, or a long-term inability to function. In practice the two overlap, and many counselors are trained in both. If your grief feels heavy but manageable, counseling is often enough; if it has been disabling for months or years, look specifically for a therapist experienced in grief therapy.

How do I find grief counseling near me?

You can search therapist directories, ask your doctor for a referral, or browse profiles of counselling psychologists who specifically list grief and loss among their focus areas — their profiles usually mention their experience, approach, and client reviews. Remember that grief counseling does not have to be in person; online sessions let you choose a counselor experienced in loss rather than settling for whoever is simply closest to you. Whichever route you take, prioritize finding someone with whom you feel safe and genuinely heard, because that relationship is what makes the healing work.
