Hello, friends! As the great anthropologists of the 14th century once said: "we live ensnared in webs of meaning." Clifford Geertz used this metaphor to describe the nature of human culture in his work "The Interpretation of Cultures" (1973). Geertz argued that humans construct and share complex symbolic systems that shape their experiences and understandings of the world, and it is through these "webs of meaning" that culture is transmitted and perpetuated. Thinking with Geertz, I want to speak of myself through the "webs" I have woven along this journey. Since I was 9 years old, when I taught my stuffed animals, I knew what I wanted to be. I wanted to be intelligent. And to be intelligent, I had to study. Moreover, I grew up hearing that the only thing that cannot be taken from anyone is knowledge. So, I held onto that and I began to believe that indeed knowledge could give me some opportunities. I began to think professionally about what I wanted to do at the age of 15 when I entered the Teaching Course, the technical high school would give me a diploma enabling me to be a teacher of young children in Basic Education, and from there, I went on to study Pedagogy. The path seemed clear and linear, were it not for my thirst for more. Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I went to India. Book knowledge no longer fulfilled my childhood dream. I wanted to challenge myself and see to what extent all that I had read made sense. I became a Portuguese teacher in the country, teaching aspiring Indian men and women to land jobs at IBM, Oracle, Accenture, Wipro, and wherever else they desired. As a researcher and educator, I firmly believe that knowledge is power. It's been the thirst for knowledge that has propelled my personal and professional journey, coupled with an insatiable quest for cultures, histories, and environments that could enhance my creativity and hands-on research. Teaching emerges as a passion that drives me not only to turn knowledge into experience for my students but also to make a meaningful impact on people's lives. Teaching holds significance for me when I can share it and catalyze positive transformation in people's lives.
