About me

I am Mahendra Baid, founder of Equilive. I live in Bangalore with my wife and two children, and I have lived and travelled across many parts of India and beyond. Over more than twenty years, I have built businesses and helped businesses grow across six industries, worked with and invested in more than twenty-five startups, and served as a COO. Some of the companies I worked with are valued in billions today. Alongside this outer life, I have kept a steady meditation practice for years, and a deep love of reading on Indian philosophy, the working of the mind, and the art of living well. I have also authored a book for children, Wings for Youngsters. Equilive is a private space to think. I help people find balance in the moments when career, money, relationships, or peace of mind fall out of harmony. I am not a therapist and not a life coach. I am someone you can think alongside, honestly and confidentially, who has lived both the striving and the stillness. If you are at a crossroads, restless, stuck, or simply seeking clarity, reach out. In our conversation, we will look at where life feels out of balance, and find a real, practical next step, drawn from experience, and where it helps, from my network. I can help you think through your career and business decisions, your relationship with money and security, the people and relationships around you, and your search for steadiness and peace. And for founders and professionals, I can go deeper on the startup journey, business strategy, and the challenges of corporate life. Where a challenge needs a qualified professional, I will say so honestly and help you find the right support. Your wellbeing comes first.

Frequently asked questions

What is career guidance and counselling?

Career guidance and counselling is a structured conversation in which an experienced guide helps you understand your strengths, interests, and options, and then supports you in making education or career decisions. It is not only for students — professionals facing a switch, a stall, or a crossroads use it too. A good session ends with clarity and a practical next step, not a generic report.

How to get career counselling in India?

You can get career counselling through school and college counsellors, career centres, online platforms that connect you with counsellors and mentors, or independent professionals offering one-on-one video sessions. Check the person's background, ask what a session covers, and prefer someone with real-world experience in the decisions you are facing. Since counselling now happens easily over video calls, you are not limited to your own city.

What is career guidance for students?

Career guidance for students helps them connect what they enjoy and are good at with real study and career options — choosing subjects after class 10, picking a course and college after class 12, or planning a first job. Done well, it combines aptitude and interest exploration with honest information about where different paths actually lead, so choices are made deliberately rather than under peer or family pressure.

How do I choose the right career guidance counselor?

Judge three things: relevant experience, honesty, and fit. A counsellor who has actually built a career, hired people, or worked in your field of interest can offer practical insight beyond aptitude tests. Be wary of anyone promising a "perfect" career or pushing a fixed package — a good career guidance counselor asks more than they advise and tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.

Should I look for a career guidance counselor near me or book an online session?

A nearby counsellor is easier to meet in person, but searching only by location limits your options to whoever happens to be in your area. A one-on-one video session works much the same way and gives you access to experienced professionals across India, often with clearer per-session pricing. Decide based on the person's credibility and how honestly they engage with you, not the pin code.

Is career guidance after 10th really necessary?

For most students, yes — the stream chosen after class 10 quietly opens and closes doors for years. Timely career guidance after 10th helps you match the decision to your aptitude and interests instead of marks, relatives' opinions, or the herd. Even two or three honest conversations at this stage can prevent an expensive stream or course change later.

How does career guidance after 12th help in choosing the right course?

After class 12 the question shifts from "which stream" to "which course, which college, and what career it leads to" — and that is where confusion peaks. Career guidance after 12th helps you compare options on real factors: what you will actually study, the job paths it opens, growth over ten years, and how well it fits your strengths and budget. It is most useful when you are torn between a "safe" choice and one you genuinely want.

How to create a career development plan?

Keep it simple: assess where you are today (skills, strengths, constraints), define where you want to be in three to five years, list the skill and experience gaps between the two, and break them into quarterly milestones with review dates. Plans made alone tend to be overly optimistic, so pressure-test yours with a mentor or senior who has walked a similar path and will honestly tell you what is realistic.

What is the meaning of a mock interview?

The meaning of a mock interview is essentially practice under realistic conditions — the same type of questions, similar time pressure, and honest feedback you never get in the actual interview. It is a rehearsal that lets your mistakes happen before they cost you the offer, whether for a job, an admission, or a panel round.

What are mock interview questions?

They are the questions an interviewer is most likely to ask, used for rehearsal: "Tell me about yourself," "What are your strengths and weaknesses?", "Why do you want this role?", and situational ones like "Describe a time you handled conflict." Lists exist for almost every role, but knowing how to practice interview questions matters more than collecting them — answer out loud, time yourself, record it, and get blunt feedback from someone who has actually interviewed candidates.

Where can I find free online mock interview practice?

You can start with friends or seniors willing to ask you real questions, college placement cells, recording yourself on camera, and AI tools that generate common questions. Free online mock interview practice is a good first step, but its feedback is usually generic; one honest round with an experienced professional who points out exactly what to change often does more than ten free attempts.

How useful is a mock interview for freshers before placements?

Very useful — most freshers lose offers not because they lack knowledge, but because they have never been interviewed before. A mock interview for freshers builds the missing muscle: structuring answers, explaining projects and internships clearly, handling follow-up questions, and staying calm under pressure. Even one or two rounds with honest feedback before placement season makes a visible difference in confidence.

Is a mock interview with AI enough to prepare for a real interview?

It is a useful start, not a finish. A mock interview with AI gives you unlimited repetitions, common questions on demand, and removes initial hesitation — but it cannot read your body language, stress you with unexpected follow-ups, or judge industry-specific depth the way an experienced human can. Use AI for volume practice, then do at least one mock with a person who has actually sat across the interview table.

What is startup advisory and when does a founder need it?

Startup advisory is experience-based guidance from someone who has built or scaled businesses, covering strategy, sales, go-to-market, processes, and the judgment calls in between. A founder typically needs it when growth has plateaued, decisions feel lonely or unclear, or the same problems keep repeating. Unlike a full-time senior hire, advisory gives you seasoned perspective without the cost of a senior salary.

Are startup consulting firms in Bangalore worth it for early-stage founders?

Startup consulting firms typically help with sales, go-to-market, hiring, and building processes, and Bangalore's depth of operators, talent, and investors makes its firms especially strong for structured, execution-heavy projects. For an early-stage founder, the real question is cost versus need: if you want one clear decision or a direction check, an hour with an experienced operator or advisor is usually enough; bring in a firm when you need sustained, hands-on execution. Whichever route you take, verify their actual outcomes in your industry first.
