I’m a marketing communications professional by profession, and for over two decades I’ve worked with words, ideas and stories across media. But storytelling became personal when my daughter was very young. I began telling her a new story every day. Sometimes it flowed easily, sometimes it didn’t. One day, I ran out of a hero. In a bit of panic, I picked up the elephant she was holding, called her Ella, and began. That moment quietly grew into Adventures of Ella Elephant, now on Amazon Kindle. Somewhere along the way, without realising it, I had begun to break storytelling down into something simple. It started in panic, really. Coming up with a fresh story every day is harder than it sounds, but looking back, I’m glad I did. That simple exercise grew into a book, Any Child Can Tell Stories. And into a workshop, which actually came first. The very first session, at a school, was featured in The Hindu Young World. You see, children already imagine, create and tell stories. We just don’t always recognise it. What sounds like random talk to us is often a story taking shape in their minds. All they really need is a little help to shape it. That’s what Little Story School is built around. A simple, gentle way for children to discover the storyteller they already are.
