We humans are an amazingly complex ensemble of precisely placed and coherently functioning cells. (well, millions of cells!) How does an invisible zygote formed by the fusion of two cells is transformed into a fascinating living machine that we are is a question that has intrigued me for the better part of my formal education in life sciences. I am particularly interested in understanding the patterning mechanisms responsible for establishment of body plan during early period of embryo development. Knowledge about these mechanisms will aid us in deciphering the underlying cause of certain congenital malformations and still-births. At a more fundamental level, knowing these developmental information networks will help us in guiding cells to a fate of choice which will greatly benefit the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine apart from providing insights into the process of our own genesis!
