I spent six weeks in Gulu, Uganda to implement funds raised by a non-profit community group that I co-led back home. We renovated school laboratories, stayed in Internally Displaced Person camps to distribute food, and visited the schools and homes of those in need. I had this deep sense of purpose and really knew the impact I was bringing to the world. Then I came back home, life happened, and I lost that purpose... I worked 4 different jobs with 4 different roles in 4 different industries between the ages of 21 and 26. I was effectively channel surfing through jobs. I had no clue what I wanted in life, no path, and worse, my job had just been made redundant and I was fired. I had zero confidence, zero clue what I wanted, and terrified that I didn’t have a place in the world or purpose that would fulfill me. I thought I wasn't meant for anything. My friends all had great jobs and had everything "figured out", while I was just fired from a job in the music industry, had no prospects, and had a month’s worth of rent in my bank account. After hundreds of applications, I got an opportunity to interview at a small technology company called NerdWallet in San Francisco. I got the job and moved to San Francisco. The intelligence and care of the team at NerdWallet, a company mission I was passionate about, the innovative energy of San Francisco, and my own maturation and readiness for a new challenge, all came together at once and hit me like a truck. After years of being told what to do in previous jobs, my boss Heather asked me to look for opportunities and propose changes for my new team of 90+ content writers and editors. For once someone put their trust in my perspective, my opinion, and enabled me to trust myself. I never looked back. I got promoted multiple times and spent the past 7 years in the startup and innovation world, learning: ⚙️ Agile Product Development 💡 Innovation Strategy 💭 Design Thinking I now embrace the experience channel surfing because it gives me a diverse perspective that can take my toolkit and help you build a truly scalable and impactful team.
