Frequently asked questions

What are the IUI setup requirements for a gynecology clinic in India?

The main IUI setup requirements are a trained gynecologist, an embryologist or lab technician skilled in sperm washing, a dedicated semen collection room, and basic lab equipment such as a sperm-washing centrifuge, incubator, and microscope. You will also need sterile IUI catheters, sperm preparation media and other consumables, consent and record-keeping formats, and the registrations applicable to fertility services in your state.

What is the IUI lab setup cost in India?

There is no single fixed figure, because the IUI lab setup cost depends on your city, the space you already have, and the equipment brands you choose. The main cost heads are sperm preparation equipment, a semen collection room, consumables, minor civil and electrical work, and staff training. For most gynecologists, an IUI lab costs a fraction of an IVF lab since it does not need a full embryology setup, and a basic functional lab can usually be planned within a budget of a few lakhs of rupees, with advanced configurations costing more.

Can I start IUI treatment with just an intrauterine insemination kit, or do I need a lab?

An intrauterine insemination kit only covers the final step of the treatment, which is placing the processed sperm into the uterus through a catheter. Before that step, the semen sample has to be washed and concentrated, and that requires a sperm preparation lab with a centrifuge, culture media, and an incubator. So for a clinic offering IUI, the kit alone is not enough — you need at least a small sperm washing setup along with it.

Does an infertility clinic setup in India always need an IVF lab, or can I start with IUI only?

No. An infertility clinic setup can begin with IUI and basic infertility management — ovulation monitoring, semen analysis, and IUI cycles — without building an IVF lab. IVF requires a much larger investment, a full embryology lab, and separate registration under India's ART rules, so many gynecologists start with IUI services first and either refer advanced cases to an IVF centre or scale up later.

Can a gynecologist perform IUI at their own clinic?

Yes. The intrauterine insemination procedure is a short, day-care procedure in which a washed and concentrated sperm sample is placed into the uterus around the time of ovulation, and it does not require operation-theatre-level infrastructure. A gynecologist can perform it at their own clinic as long as the clinic has sperm preparation facilities, trained staff, and the required registrations in place.

Is adding an IUI lab setup to an existing gynecology practice profitable?

For many gynecologists, yes. There is a large unmet demand for fertility services in India, and couples in smaller cities often have no IUI facility nearby. Since the investment for an IUI lab setup is much lower than for an IVF centre and the service can run alongside a regular OPD, practices that generate a steady flow of infertility cases through their own patients and referrals generally find it commercially viable. Profitability ultimately depends on case volume, pricing, and how well the lab is utilised.

How long does it take to set up an IUI clinic in India?

Once the key decisions are made, a basic IUI clinic can usually be made operational within a few weeks to a couple of months. The equipment list for an IUI lab setup is compact compared with an IVF lab, so delays typically come from equipment lead times, staff training, and compliance paperwork rather than from construction work.

What training does a gynecologist need before starting IUI treatment?

Along with equipment and approvals, hands-on training is one of the practical IUI setup requirements. Gynecologists usually take short-term training in sperm washing techniques and IUI catheter placement, and many also do an observership at an established IUI or IVF centre to understand lab workflow, quality control, consent documentation, and cycle management before launching their own services.
