Frequently asked questions

What is CA articleship training?

CA articleship training is the compulsory practical training stage of the Chartered Accountancy course in India, where a student works under a practising chartered accountant or in an ICAI-approved firm or company. Trainees handle real assignments in auditing, taxation, accounting and compliance while receiving a monthly stipend. The training is supervised by a principal as per ICAI norms, and successful completion is documented through the prescribed ICAI forms. This hands-on exposure forms the foundation for becoming a qualified CA.

What is the CA articleship duration?

Under ICAI's new scheme of education and training (applicable to registrations from 1 July 2023 onwards), the articleship duration is 2 years and begins after clearing both groups of CA Intermediate. Students registered under the earlier scheme complete 3 years of practical training. Leave for exams and holidays is allowed as per ICAI rules, and eligible students can also opt for industrial training with approved companies where permitted under ICAI norms.

What is the CA articleship stipend?

The CA articleship stipend is the monthly amount a firm or company pays its article trainee. ICAI prescribes minimum stipend rates that vary with the population of the city and the year of training, and firms are free to pay above these minimums. In practice, Big 4 and large mid-tier firms in metro cities pay considerably more, and the amount often improves as you progress in the course, for example after clearing CA Final groups. Always confirm the stipend before joining, since it varies widely across firms and cities.

How to get a CA articleship?

Start by clearing both groups of CA Intermediate, since most good firms shortlist on that basis. Prepare a crisp one-page resume highlighting your education, Excel and PowerPoint skills, and any internships, and then apply through the main channels: ICAI campus placement drives, direct email applications to firms, LinkedIn and other job portals, and referrals from seniors. Shortlist the type of firm — Big 4, mid-tier, or small — based on the exposure and work environment you want, and apply broadly rather than to a few names. For interviews, revise accounting and audit basics and be ready to explain why you chose audit or tax.

How to get a CA articleship in Big 4?

The Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG) hire article trainees mainly through ICAI campus placement drives, so registering for campus is the first step. Outside campus, you can apply through each firm's career portal, reach out to HR or seniors on LinkedIn, and use employee referrals, which significantly improve shortlisting chances. Make sure both groups of CA Intermediate are cleared and your resume reflects Excel and communication skills, as these are common screening filters. Apply as soon as results are out, target multiple cities if needed, and keep strong mid-tier firms as parallel options since Big 4 articleship seats are limited.

Where can I find a CA articleship vacancy?

The most reliable sources are ICAI's campus placement portal, the career pages of CA firms, and job portals such as LinkedIn and Naukri. Writing directly to firms in your target city with a short, tailored email and a one-page resume also works, since many openings are never publicly advertised. Referrals from seniors, college placement cells, and CA student communities regularly surface fresh vacancies as well. Applying right after your CA Intermediate result cycle helps, because seats fill quickly.

How to download the CA articleship completion certificate?

Articleship completion gets recorded when you submit Form 108, the statement of particulars for completion of practical training, through ICAI's Self Service Portal (SSP) and your principal certifies it. Once the completion is approved and reflected in your student account, the completion certificate can be downloaded from the portal's practical training section. If the status is still pending, first confirm with your principal that Form 108 has been submitted and approved, and then raise a request with ICAI's e-services support if the download option still does not appear.

What are the Big 4 accounting firms?

The Big 4 accounting firms are Deloitte, PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), EY (Ernst & Young) and KPMG — the four largest professional services networks in the world. They provide audit and assurance, taxation, and consulting services, and they are among the biggest recruiters of CA students for articleship and qualified roles. In India, these networks operate through their member firms and are commonly referred to as the Big 4 audit firms in India, with large offices in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata.

How to get into Big 4 accounting firms?

For CA students, the primary routes are ICAI campus placements for articleship, direct applications on the firms' India career portals, and referrals from existing employees. For qualified CAs and freshers, openings come through off-campus drives, job portals, and LinkedIn networking with recruiters and partners. Your candidature becomes stronger with both groups of CA Intermediate or Final cleared in fewer attempts, consistent academics, strong Excel and PowerPoint skills, and a well-structured one-page resume tailored to audit or tax roles. Interview preparation should cover accounting standards and auditing fundamentals, since Big 4 interviews test basics before fit.

What is the Big 4 accounting firms salary in India?

For article trainees, Big 4 offices in metro cities generally pay stipends well above the ICAI minimum, and the monthly amount commonly falls in the ₹15,000–₹30,000 range depending on the firm, city and profile. For newly qualified chartered accountants, entry-level packages in assurance and tax typically sit in the ₹8–12 lakh per annum band, while consulting and deal advisory roles usually pay more. Actual figures vary by service line, city and hiring market, so treat any number as an indicative range rather than a standard.

Are there Big 4 audit firms in Bangalore for articleship?

Yes — Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG all have offices in Bangalore and regularly induct article trainees, mainly for audit and assurance and taxation work. Students can apply through ICAI campus placements, the firms' India career portals, or referrals from employees working there. Since Bangalore is a competitive location, it is sensible to apply to multiple Big 4 offices across cities and, in parallel, target strong mid-tier firms in Bangalore, which offer solid audit exposure and are often easier to get into.

What is a statutory audit in simple words?

In simple words, a statutory audit is an audit that the law makes compulsory — the word "statutory" means required by a statute. It is an independent examination of a company's books of accounts, records and transactions to check whether the financial statements present a true and fair view and comply with applicable laws and accounting standards. The audit is performed by an independent statutory auditor, generally a practising chartered accountant, who issues an audit report with an opinion on the financial statements. In India, every company must undergo such an audit each financial year.

When is a statutory audit applicable to a company?

Statutory audit applicability under the Companies Act, 2013 is universal for companies — every private limited company, public company, and one person company must get its books audited every year, irrespective of turnover or size. Separately, the Income-tax Act requires a tax audit once prescribed turnover limits are crossed, currently ₹1 crore for business and ₹50 lakh for profession, with higher limits available for largely digital transactions. Other entities such as trusts, societies and partnerships may also need audits under their specific laws or funding requirements.

How to do a statutory audit of a private limited company?

The process begins with the appointment of the auditor (the first auditor by the board, followed by shareholder appointment) and filing of Form ADT-1 with the ROC. The auditor then plans the audit, obtains the trial balance and financials, and performs fieldwork covering vouching of transactions, verification of bank balances, debtors, creditors, inventory, loans and fixed assets, independent confirmations, checking of statutory dues such as GST, TDS and PF, and testing of internal controls. Practitioners work through a statutory audit checklist so that compliance with accounting standards, Schedule III presentation, and CARO 2020 reporting where applicable is fully covered. The audit concludes with management representations, communication with those charged with governance, and signing of the audit report with an opinion, after which the financials are filed with the ROC.

What is the statutory audit due date?

For companies, the financial year ends on 31 March, and the statutory audit report along with the audited financial statements must be approved by the board and placed before the members at the AGM, which is due within six months of the year-end; ROC filing of the financials in AOC-4 follows within 30 days of the AGM. Under the Income-tax Act, the tax audit report for audited cases is due by 30 September of the relevant assessment year, with the income tax return due by 31 October. These timelines can be extended through government notifications, so always verify the dates applicable to the current year.
