The UK High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is a unique visa route designed to attract talented graduates from top-ranked global universities. Unlike many other UK work visas, it is unsponsored, meaning you do not need a job offer to apply.


Eligibility and Requirements

  • You must have been awarded an overseas degree from a university on the UK government's official Global Universities List.
  • Your degree must have been awarded within the last 5 years before you apply.
  • Your degree must be equivalent to a UK bachelor's, master's, or PhD degree.
  • You must obtain verification of your qualification from Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) before applying. This is a mandatory step.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must have sufficient personal savings of at least £1,270 in your bank account for a continuous period of at least 28 days before your application date. This requirement may be waived if you have been in the UK on a valid visa for at least 12 months.
  • You must demonstrate English language proficiency at a CEFR level B1. This can be done by passing an approved test or by having a degree from a university that taught your course entirely in English.
  • You cannot have previously held a UK Graduate visa or a High Potential Individual visa.

Visa Details

  • The visa is an unsponsored route, meaning you do not need a job offer from a UK employer to apply.
  • The visa is valid for 2 years for bachelor's or master's degree holders and 3 years for PhD or doctoral qualification holders.
  • You have the right to work for any employer, be self-employed, or look for work. You cannot work as a professional sportsperson.
  • You can bring your partner and dependent children with you if they meet the eligibility and financial requirements.
  • The HPI visa does not lead directly to permanent settlement in the UK. You must switch to a different visa route (like a Skilled Worker visa) to stay in the country long-term.
  • You can travel outside and re-enter the UK while your visa is valid.

Application Process and Costs

  • Step 1: Get your academic qualification verified by Ecctis.
  • Step 2: Gather all required documents, including your passport, the Ecctis statement, proof of English proficiency, and bank statements.
  • Step 3: Apply online through the official UK government website.
  • Step 4: Pay the application fees, which include:
  • Visa Application Fee (currently £880).
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is £1,035 for each year of the visa.
  • The Ecctis verification fee (currently £252).
  • Step 5: Provide your biometric information (fingerprints and photo) at a visa application center.
  • Step 6: Await a decision from the Home Office, which typically takes about three weeks for applications made outside the UK.
