The Netherlands' Orientation Year permit (also known as the "zoekjaar" or search year visa) is a residence permit for highly educated individuals to look for work or start a business in the Netherlands. This permit is an excellent pathway for international graduates to transition from student life to a career in the Netherlands, as it gives you a full year with unrestricted access to the job market. It's important to note that you can work freely with this permit; a separate work permit is not required for employers to hire you.


Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Orientation Year permit, you must meet one of the following criteria within the past three years:

  • You completed a bachelor's, master's, or PhD program at a Dutch higher education institution.
  • You obtained a master's or PhD degree from a foreign educational institution that is ranked in the top 200 of at least two of the major general or subject-specific ranking lists (e.g., Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, or ShanghaiRanking Consultancy).
  • You completed a post-master's program in the Netherlands for at least one academic year (minimum 10 months).
  • You have conducted scientific research in the Netherlands.
  • You obtained a master's degree in the context of an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course.

In addition to the educational requirements, you must also:

  • Provide proof of your qualification, such as your degree certificate or a statement of graduation.
  • Demonstrate sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay. While there's no strict income requirement to qualify for the permit itself, you must be able to sustain yourself as you're not eligible for public funds like social assistance benefits.
  • Have a valid passport.

Key Information

  • Validity: The permit is valid for one year and cannot be extended.
  • Cost: The application fee is €243 (as of 2025). This fee is non-refundable, even if your application is rejected.
  • Application Deadline: You must apply for the permit within three years of your graduation date or the completion of your research. This provides flexibility if you choose to return to your home country before coming back to the Netherlands.
  • Purpose: The main goal of this permit is to allow you to find a job as a "highly skilled migrant" or to start your own business. If you secure a job that meets the highly skilled migrant criteria during your orientation year, your employer can apply for a highly skilled migrant permit for you. A key advantage is that a reduced salary threshold applies to you, making you a more attractive candidate for employers.


Application Process

The application process differs depending on whether you are currently in the Netherlands or applying from abroad.


  • Applying from within the Netherlands: If you are already living in the Netherlands with a valid residence permit for study or research, you can typically apply online through the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) website. You'll need to be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) and have a Citizen Service Number (BSN).


  • Applying from abroad: If you are outside the Netherlands, you may need to go through the Entry and Residence Procedure (TEV), which involves applying for a provisional residence permit (MVV) and the residence permit simultaneously. You'll submit your application to a Dutch embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
