- A university degree or a vocational qualification of at least two years, which is recognized in the country where it was obtained.
- Proof of German language skills at a minimum of level A1 (CEFR) or English at level B2 (CEFR).
- Sufficient financial means to support yourself for one year. As of 2025, this is generally at least €1,091 per month (€13,092 for the year). This can be proven with a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.
- Health insurance.
Points-Based System:
If you are not a recognized skilled worker, you must score a minimum of six points based on the following criteria:
- Four points: Partial recognition of your foreign professional qualification in Germany.
- Three points: German language skills at level B2 or higher, or at least five years of professional experience within the last seven years.
- Two points: German language skills at level B1, or at least two years of professional experience within the last five years, or if you are 35 years old or younger.
- One point: German language skills at level A2, or English language skills at level C1 or higher, or if you are between 36 and 40 years old, or for a previous legal and continuous stay of at least six months in Germany within the last five years (excluding tourism), or if your qualification is in a "shortage occupation" in Germany.
What the Opportunity Card Allows
* **Duration:** The card is issued for a maximum of one year.
* **Job Seeking:** It allows you to search for qualified employment in Germany.
* **Working:** You are permitted to work for up to 20 hours per week in part-time jobs. You can also do trial work for up to two weeks at a time with a potential employer.
* **Transition:** If you find a qualified job during your stay, you can apply for a different residence permit (e.g., a Skilled Worker visa or EU Blue Card) without having to leave Germany.
### Application Process
You can apply for the Opportunity Card through the Consular Services Portal of the Federal Foreign Office or at a German mission (embassy or consulate) in your country of residence.
* **Online Application:** You can use the online portal to check your points and fill out the application form. You will then receive a link to book an in-person appointment.
* **In-person Application:** You will submit a completed application form, your passport, and all required documents and certificates. You will also pay the application fee of €75.
