About me

I am Gareth Roberts, a seasoned professional with over a decade of experience in data analysis, ML/AI, cognitive science, and cloud computing. My education includes a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Western Australia, as well as an MBA from the Power Business School. I was trained as a psychologist and have 15+ years of experience in NLP, Quantitative Finance, and computer vision. This has provided me with a solid foundation in pure and applied research methodologies, business strategy, and technical communication. Previous positions I've held include, Head of AI Engineering, Head of Artificial Intelligence, Chief Technology Officer, Head of Data Analytics, Senior Research Scientist, and several postdoctoral research fellowships. Previous projects I have been involved in include: the development of a life insurance underwriting tool that used LLMs to process pre-assessment insurance enquiries. This activity occupied a significant portion of underwriters' daily activities but had a poor conversion rate. The development of this tool reduced a tedious task taking hours or even days to complete, to a couple of minutes. This project required integration into an existing complex IT infrastructure and strict data governance and compliance in a highly regulated industry. In my capacity as Chief Technology Officer, I led the design and implementation of a HPC AI cloud architecture for a mining exploration company utilising advanced computer vision and deep learning techniques. This involved developing reliable data pipeline automations to collect, clean, and analyse high-resolution remote sensing data (e.g., satellite imagery, SAR, GIS layers) to aid geologists in reducing uncertainty in their mineral exploration efforts. My technical skills are grounded from years of experimental research, where I supervised and taught students and colleagues advanced statistical techniques and analytical skills. I draw on this experience to add value to each project I engage in. My passion resides at the nexus of business, technology, and research, where I am constantly seeking new challenges to apply AI in creating tangible business value.
