I received direct guidance from Prof. Chandrasekaran, and this document clearly captures the same structured thinking he shared with us on how to choose the right data career. I was initially confused about which data role to pursue, but this guide laid out everything from understanding different data roles to aligning them with one’s background in a very practical way. His classroom guidance, real-world perspective, and the projects I worked on based on his suggestions helped me build the right skills with clarity and purpose. This focused approach played a major role in my complete transition into a data career and ultimately helped me land my current job. I strongly recommend his guidance and this document to anyone serious about building a career in data

Being an IT professional we always miss out on how to explain our work with finesse, and that impacts our work more than we think, this book is very helpful to address that very specific problem. Thank you for such insightful document and key points on how to implement it in everyday lives

About me

I’m Ganesh Chandrasekaran, a Big Data Architect and educator with 25+ years in the IT industry and 8+ years teaching and mentoring engineers and students. I work at the intersection of large-scale data systems and engineering education, with a strong focus on how systems are designed, scaled, governed, and kept reliable in production. Since 2018, I’ve taught and mentored 1000+ students, helping them move from academic knowledge to industry-grade thinking. I also mentor through the Women’s Alliance Network at Rowan University, supporting professionals navigating careers in data and engineering. I write extensively about data engineering, big data, and MLOps, with 200+ technical articles focused on practical, real-world insights rather than hype-driven trends. I’m opinionated about fundamentals, skeptical of shortcuts, and deeply invested in helping engineers understand not just how systems work, but why they break.
