Fluoride is a key mineral used to prevent tooth decay. It strengthens tooth enamel and can help repair early stages of tooth decay. This mineral is naturally found in many foods and water sources and is also added to dental products such as toothpaste and mouthwash.


Fluoridation, the process of adding fluoride to public water supplies, has been recognized as an effective method to reduce tooth decay. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this practice has contributed to a 25% reduction in tooth decay.


However, not all communities have access to fluoridated water, prompting the adoption of alternative fluoridation strategies, such as adding fluoride to salt. This practice began in Switzerland in the mid-1950s and has since spread to around 50 countries worldwide, particularly across Europe and South and Central America.


Salt fluoridation involves adding fluoride to table salt, which then becomes a vehicle for fluoride consumption through everyday meals. This method has proven to be particularly effective due to its low cost and wide reach. It is also easier to implement in regions where water fluoridation might not be feasible due to infrastructure or political challenges.


In countries like Switzerland, 85% of domestic salt is fluoridated, and in Germany, the figure is 67%. In Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Cuba, salt fluoridation reaches over a hundred million people. In Jamaica, where all salt destined for human consumption has been fluoridated since 1987, the population has seen significant reductions in tooth decay.


The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) introduced salt fluoridation to several South American countries, where it led to a notable decline in tooth decay by 50% or more. This large-scale impact illustrates the effectiveness and economic benefits of salt fluoridation as a caries prevention strategy.


Overall, salt fluoridation is a practical and cost-effective method for reducing tooth decay and improving oral health in regions where water fluoridation is less accessible. The widespread use of fluoridated salt could have a significant impact on oral health outcomes globally, especially in developing regions with high rates of dental caries.
