About me
I graduated as Biólogo (1979) and Doctor en Biologia (1986) at the Univ Nac Córdoba (UNC, ARG). My thesis studied the population ecology of Triatoma infestans (the main vector of Chagas disease) under the natural climatic conditions of the Gran Chaco. I obtained a postdoctoral position at the Zoology Dept (Oxford Univ, UK, 1990) and at the Natural History Museum (London, UK, 1991 - 1992). I developed an expertise in insect population ecology and began exploring the use of satelite imagery for the study of the geographic distribution of insect species.
Back in Argentina and at the UNC, I studied the population ecology of a mosquito producing losses to dairy in central Argentina, when mosquito population outbreaks occurred. An early warning system was developed using images of meteorological satellites.
From 1992, I studied the population ecology of a leafhopper that transmits a virus to corn, producing dwarf plants and strong losses. Using satellite imagery, we produced a system that predicted the leafhopper population outbreaks
In 1998 I moved to the CRILAR. I was the Director of CRILAR's 2001-2013. As part of the ECLAT network, I created a reference lab for the use of remote sensing and geographic information system for the study of the geographic distribution of Triatominae, that received several dozens students from Latin America to receive training on our expertise
I supervised several doctoral students in Argentina and other LatAm countries. The studies were strongly linked with vector control programs of a number of health agencies in Argentina and abroad. I advised activities for PAHO, WHO and MSF at Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador and Colombia.
All the work on Triatominae, mosquitoes, leafhoppers, satellite imagery was published in more than 100 scientific articles (see Google Scholar).
From 2019 I am associated to Instituto de Diversidad y Ecología Animal, linked to CONICET and the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (http://idea.conicet.unc.edu.ar).
From 2021 we run a Diplomatura on Manejo Integrado de Vectores de Interes Sanitario (integrated management of health important vectors) from the Cordoba University in association with ANLIS-Malbran.
