August 2018, I got my very first placement shortlist - it was Bain, the most sought after firm at my college. My CV didn't boast of a big 4 internship, so called 'target societies' (college societies that firms like on a CV), or tens of national/global case competitions.
A similar thing happened at IIMA - I was a fresher and didn't have any fancy work experience. Yet, I managed to become the only fresher to get shortlists from all three big consulting firms (MBB).
Both the above instances highlight a key thing - you don't have to be the best at everything to get a shortlist from the most sought after consulting firms. You need to package your work in a way that brings life to your achievements and skillsets and makes the firm believe you can be a good consultant.
Having been part of multiple recruitment drives at Bain, I know what consulting firms look for in a resume. This offline CV review will include a high-level summary feedback and key improvement suggestions as comments on the PDF version of your CV. This will give you a good idea of improvement areas in your CV which can then be followed by a detailed one to one call to take it home.
