🌐 Live Demo: https://vitae01.vercel.app/

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: React + Vite + Tailwind CSS
  • Backend: Node.js + Express.js
  • Database: MongoDB
  • AI Integration: OpenRouter API
  • Authentication: JWT-based authentication

Setup Instructions

1. Install dependencies

Open a terminal in both the frontend and backend folders and run:

npm install

2. Configure backend environment variables

Create a .env file inside the backend folder and configure the following:

MONGODB_URI=mongodb+srv://<db-user>:<db-password>@<cluster-url>/vitae?retryWrites=true

JWT_ACCESS_SECRET=<64+ characters random string>

OPENROUTER_API_KEY=<your-openrouter-api-key>

OPENROUTER_SITE_URL=https://<your-site-url>

OPENROUTER_APP_NAME=<Your App Name>

NODE_ENV=production

PORT=4000

CLIENT_ORIGIN=https://<your-frontend-domain

COOKIE_SECURE=true

COOKIE_SAME_SITE=lax

COOKIE_NAME=vitae_refresh

REFRESH_TOKEN_DAYS=30

RESET_TOKEN_MINUTES=30

RATE_LIMIT_MULTIPLIER=1

OPENROUTER_MODELS=<model,model,model>

Important notes:

  • Replace all placeholders with your actual credentials and URLs.
  • Generate a strong, random JWT secret of at least 64 characters.
  • Get your API key from OpenRouter. AI generation will remain disabled without a valid key.
  • OPENROUTER_MODELS is optional; omit it to use the application's default models.
  • For local development, set COOKIE_SECURE=false and configure the remaining cookie settings according to your local setup.
  • CLIENT_ORIGIN should contain your actual frontend origin. For multiple origins, use comma-separated values if supported by the application.

3. Configure frontend environment variables

Create a .env file in the frontend folder.

For local development:

VITE_API_URL=http://127.0.0.1:4000/api

The Vite proxy is configured for local development, so this variable may not be required if the proxy is being used correctly.

For production:

VITE_API_URL=https://<your-backend-url>/api

Replace the placeholder with your deployed backend URL.

4. Run and deploy

Start the frontend and backend using the scripts defined in their respective package.json files. Verify that MongoDB, API credentials, CORS, cookies, and frontend/backend URLs are configured correctly before deployment.
