I’m a PhD-trained Earth scientist working at the intersection of science, research program management, federal funding, and science policy. Over the years, I’ve navigated the transition from graduate research into managing and supporting large-scale research programs, while also gaining experience in grant competitions, proposal review, federal and non-profit research programs, interdisciplinary science, and science-policy engagement. If you're pursuing a PhD or working in research, you’ve probably heard plenty about publishing papers, finishing your dissertation, and applying for academic jobs. What is discussed much less is how many other paths your research experience can open. My own career has taken me from a PhD in Geochemistry into work involving federal research programs, grants, program management, atmospheric and climate science, science policy, and cross-agency scientific initiatives. I’ve also had opportunities to participate in professional development and science-policy programs, including the AMS Climate Policy Colloquium, and to work with scientists and program leaders across different parts of the research community. I created this space to help graduate students, postdocs, and early-career researchers better understand opportunities that often aren’t clearly explained in academia. Particularly careers beyond the traditional professor/research scientist pathway.
