GSoC / LFX /SoB/ ESOC Proposal Review 📝

Your proposal is your one shot. A great codebase contribution can still be sunk by a weak proposal - and a tight, well-structured proposal can carry a marginal applicant across the line. Let's make sure yours lands.

Who it's for: Students who have already drafted a GSoC, LFX, or similar open-source program proposal and want a serious review before submitting. You've done the work - now you need a second pair of eyes from someone who reviews proposals on the mentor side.

What I'll review:

1. Project understanding - does your proposal show you actually grok the problem, or are you paraphrasing the project description?
2. Technical approach - is your solution realistic, well-scoped, and demonstrably yours?
3. Timeline & milestones - are your weekly deliverables believable, or did you flatten everything into "implement feature X"?
4. Prior contributions - how you've framed your existing PRs and engagement with the project
5. Risk handling - do you address edge cases, dependencies, and what could go wrong?
6. Writing quality - clarity, structure, length, formatting (yes, mentors notice)
7. The "why you" angle - what makes your application different from the 100 others the mentor will read

You'll get:

1. Live walkthrough - 45 min going through your proposal section by section, live edits
2. Written annotated version - your proposal returned with inline comments, suggestions, and rewrites within 48 hours
3. Honest verdict - strong / borderline / weak, with specific reasons. I won't tell you it's great if it isn't.
4. One revision round - send me the updated version within 7 days, I'll do a second written pass (no extra cost)

What you need to bring: A complete first draft. Not an outline, not bullet points - a real draft you'd be willing to submit if you had to. The review is only useful when there's something to review.

Don't book if: You haven't started a draft yet, or you're still picking your project. Book the GSoC / LFX Application Strategy session for that - it covers project selection and structure. This service is for proposals that already exist.

My background: I cracked LFX as a mentee in 2025 with a proposal I revised 6 times before submitting. Now I'm an LFX Mentor with the Linux Foundation and GSoC Mentor with OWASP BLT - I read proposals from the other side now. I know what makes a mentor say "yes" within the first 30 seconds vs. "next."
