Truly understanding weighted averages - recordings

Weighted average is one of the most important topics in GMAT Quant (and Data insights). Its application is quite widespread. Some questions directly use terms like 'mean', and some initially look as though they have nothing to do with averages, but they can be answered using the understanding of averages.

Many test-takers are comfortable with the simple and weighted average formulae. And they can typically apply them comfortably to solve questions.

However, in my experience, most times underlying understanding is lacking. They solve questions the way an Excel sheet would calculate a value - you create a formula, you populate some values, you assign the values to various variables in the formula and voila! you get the answer.

But, even if their answers are off, they do not see that. In fact, often it is unclear what 'off' even means. Approaches are often like black boxes. You put in some inputs, and an output comes out on the other end. Why things work the way they do is often ignored.

We'll start with understanding averages - we'll try to understand the concept of average fundamentally.
