I started out as the fresher who thought being the best coder in the room was the whole job. It isn't. I learned that slowly, and expensively. Since then I've built full-stack products for startups - Python, TypeScript, React, Postgres, Cloud, and a lot of agentic/LLM work lately. Usually several products at once, with the deadline already set. I've written the estimates, made the build-vs-buy calls nobody wanted to make, watched engineers I mentored become leads, and sat on the hiring side of the table deciding who gets the offer. And almost none of the hard parts were technical. The hard parts were disagreeing with a senior without torching the relationship. Being heard in a room where I was the quietest person. Saying no to scope. Knowing when to stop polishing and ship. And now — staying genuinely valuable in a world where AI writes the first draft of everything.
