The diagnostic assessment for ADHD is aimed at helping adult individuals (18 years and above) to understand if their behavior, experience of distress, emotional issues and ways of functioning in different areas of life, are a result Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD.

Things you need to know before starting the process of diagnostic assessment:

  1. The assessment process typically ranges from 3.5 to 4 hours. You have the option to do the assessment in one seating or divide 2 hours in 2 days time to complete the assessment process.
  2. The first 1.5 to 2 hours of assessment include: understanding your symptoms, history of your childhood and recent experiences, mental status examination, screening tools for ADHD, personality assessment, or any other psychiatric concern (based on your history and life experiences).
  3. Accordingly the next 2 hours will involve the use of standardized and evidence based diagnostic questionnaire to determine the presence, severity and type of ADHD.
  4. The diagnosis is given by following the guidelines of DSM V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition by American Psychiatric Association).
  5. The individual is advised to also have a family member, a close friend or a partner accompany them during the process. This includes: a parent/grand-parent (or a primary caregiver from childhood), a room-mate , partner or close/childhood friend (any person who has known the individual for long period of time).
  6. Please note: It is not mandatory to have a companion during the process. It is absolutely fine if you want to go through the assessment process by yourself.
  7. It is also advised to have any report cards from school or evaluation/assessment reports from your childhood ready. This will help in the process of assessment, as the diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood, also requires the clinician to probe and understand your behavior as a child in different areas of your life.

  9. After the assessment, the clinician will share a comprehensive report based on your diagnostic evaluation. The report will include a summary of findings, result of diagnoses and recommendations for further treatment or support.
  10. Please note: The process of compiling results and formulation of report is based on detailed research and understanding of the individual's responses. Hence, the report in a pdf format will be shared with you after 14 days from the date of assessment .
  11. After receiving the report, you may consider scheduling a follow up therapy session of 50 minutes with the clinician in order to understand the report and discuss further course of action (if required). If you are already seeking support/counseling/psychotherapy from another mental health professional, you may consider taking the report to them in order to discuss and understand your options.
