SAP FI Meets ABAP: The Techno-Functional Playbook
By Aditya Gupta, SAP Consultant. Expanded Edition, October 2026. 103 pages, 37 chapters, 7 parts, 5 appendices.
What this book is
Most SAP projects run into trouble where finance and code meet. The functional consultant knows the accounting but can't read the code behind it. The developer writes clean ABAP but doesn't know why a posting must balance by profit center, or why the payment run must never be bypassed.
This book teaches both sides in one place. It covers the finance behind the code and the code behind the finance, so you can become the techno-functional consultant that project managers want to keep.
Who it's for
Functional FI consultants who want to:
- read ABAP and debug a posting
- write precise specifications developers can build from
- review developers' work with confidence
ABAP developers who want to:
- understand the accounting rules behind the tables, such as period-end, reconciliation and audit
- write programs that respect those rules instead of breaking them
Career-focused readers, including job seekers, students and consultants moving into S/4HANA:
- an interview chapter with model answers
- six portfolio projects
- a career roadmap
The preface gives three reading paths: functional consultant new to code, ABAP developer new to finance, and interview preparation in a hurry.
What's inside
Part What you get
1. Foundations
The techno-functional mindset, the SAP finance landscape (ECC vs S/4HANA and the Universal Journal table ACDOCA), organizational structure and master data, the anatomy of an accounting document, and the minimum ABAP needed to read and debug code
2. FI Processes Through a Technical Lens
GL, AP, AR, Asset Accounting, Bank and Cash, Taxes/Currencies/Document Splitting, and Period-End Closing, each shown with its tables and technical behavior
3. ABAP for Finance
CDS views, reports with ABAP SQL and ALV, selection screens, authorizations and logs, function modules, classes and BAPIs, posting with BAPI_ACC_DOCUMENT_POST (with working examples for a G/L entry and a vendor invoice), OO ABAP and unit tests, and performance tuning
4. Enhancements and Extensibility
The enhancement landscape, validations and substitutions, BAdIs in FI, Clean Core and ABAP Cloud, and custom fields on the journal entry
5. Payments, Interfaces and Migration
Payment run and media (F110, DMEE/DMEEX), forms and output, interfaces and integration, data migration and cutover
6. Operating, Testing and Growing
A troubleshooting playbook, testing, security and controls, writing specs developers like, portfolio projects, interview Q&A and a career roadmap
7. Case Study and Labs
A full month-end accruals automation case study, plus a 12-lab workbook
Appendices
Quick-reference tables, glossary, code snippet library, review checklists, and a sources and validation log
What makes it different
- Two lenses in every chapter. Each chapter has a Functional lens (what the business needs) and a Technical lens (how the system does it). Most SAP books cover only one side.
- Built to practice, not just read. Every chapter ends with a Try it exercise and a Checkpoint self-review list. The 12-lab workbook has you trace a posting through BKPF and ACDOCA, debug FB50 with /h, and compare your queries against FAGLB03. Each lab has a self-check.
- A full project from requirement to design. The accruals case study starts with the questions to ask the controller. It then covers the solution design, the data contract, the BAPI wrapper, the validations, the application log, the authorization checks and the unit tests, all in one worked example.
- Modern and future-proof. The code uses modern ABAP syntax (7.40+). The book covers S/4HANA, the Universal Journal, CDS views, and Clean Core with ABAP Cloud. It also covers how classic POST BAPIs relate to the released journal entry business object (I_JournalEntryTP) and when to choose configuration, key-user extensibility, BAdI, ABAP Cloud or side-by-side extension.
- A built-in decision framework. The golden rules are: configure before you code, never bypass standard posting logic, test every change with a finance check, and document the why. Many books teach how to build things but not when to build them.
- Career tools included. Beyond the technical content, you get six portfolio projects (aging report, journal upload tool, posting guard, reconciliation checker, payment file adjustment and a clean core study). You also get a guide to presenting each project, a chapter of interview questions with model answers, and a career roadmap.
- Transparent about accuracy. Technical claims were checked against SAP-authored sources such as SAP blogs, SAP Community, SAP PRESS and Knowledge Base Articles. The book marks them as Validated or Verify in your release, and Appendix E lists the sources. It also states plainly that the SAP Help Portal pages couldn't be retrieved during validation. That is more candid than most technical books.
Why it's worth buying
- It shortens the path from "I know FI" or "I know ABAP" to "I can deliver FI solutions end to end."
- It gives you reusable assets: code snippets, review checklists, spec-writing guidance and portfolio-ready projects.
- You can read it front to back or jump straight to the chapter you need, such as posting BAPIs, validations, payment media or troubleshooting.
- It helps you do better work on real projects and show that skill in interviews.
Good to know before buying
- It is a practical playbook of about 100 pages, not an exhaustive reference for every FI configuration or every ABAP feature.
- Examples use sample values (company code 1000, chart of accounts YCOA, USD). You'll need to replace them with your own.
- Code samples are teaching examples. Test them in a sandbox and check field names in your own system before using them.
- Some details are release- or edition-specific, and the book flags these for you to confirm.
- To get the most from the labs, you need access to a sandbox, trial or training S/4HANA system.
