Product Sense: Build the Muscle by Practising

Most people think product sense is a mysterious talent that some product managers, founders, and designers are simply born with. This book argues the opposite.

Product sense is not magic. It is a learnable skill built through deliberate practice.

At its core, product sense is the ability to consistently identify what users truly need, decide what matters most, and create products that deliver meaningful impact. In a world where AI can generate endless ideas, specifications, designs, and code, the scarce skill is no longer execution—it is judgment. Knowing what to build remains the ultimate competitive advantage.

The book introduces a simple model:

Product Sense = Empathy + Creativity + Judgment

Empathy helps you uncover real user needs, including the emotional and social motivations users rarely express directly. Creativity helps generate meaningful solutions to those needs. Judgment helps select the right solution among many possibilities while balancing business goals, technical constraints, and user value.

The first section explores what product sense actually is and why it matters more than ever in the AI era. Readers learn the Product Sense Loop:

Hypothesize → Test → Observe → Reflect → Update

This loop transforms experience into expertise and helps practitioners continuously improve their decision-making quality.

The second section focuses on developing empathy. Readers learn how to observe real people using products, conduct better user interviews, uncover hidden motivations, identify functional, emotional, and social needs, and synthesize research into actionable insights. Practical frameworks, observation exercises, and interview drills help train the ability to see problems others miss.

The third section develops creativity. Instead of waiting for inspiration, readers learn repeatable methods for generating ideas. Techniques such as Jobs-to-Be-Done, SCAMPER, inversion, first-principles thinking, analogical reasoning, constraint-driven ideation, and problem reframing are demonstrated through real examples and hands-on exercises.

The fourth section introduces a structured framework for product design and product interviews. Readers learn how to define a mission, choose a target user, map journeys, prioritize problems, generate solutions, select a strong V1, and communicate product thinking clearly and systematically.

The fifth section focuses on product judgment. Topics include prioritization, trade-offs, decision-making under uncertainty, metrics, North Star thinking, opportunity sizing, cost of delay, RICE scoring, Kano analysis, and avoiding misleading metrics. The emphasis is not on frameworks alone but on developing the reasoning behind strong decisions.

The sixth section addresses AI product sense. Readers learn how AI changes product design, how to think about probabilistic systems, trust, evaluation frameworks, safety, cost, latency, model routing, human-in-the-loop systems, agents, memory, and AI-specific user experiences. The book treats AI not as a feature but as a new design medium that requires different product thinking.

The book also contains dozens of teardown analyses across consumer, B2B, marketplace, fintech, education, healthcare, and AI products. These case studies reveal the hidden decisions behind successful products such as productivity tools, marketplaces, developer platforms, AI assistants, and consumer applications.

Throughout the book, readers complete drills, exercises, reflection prompts, and practical challenges designed to build product instincts through repetition. A structured multi-week training program helps readers systematically strengthen their product sense over time.

The central message is simple:

Great products are not created by luck, intuition, or genius. They are built by people who repeatedly observe users, frame problems clearly, generate thoughtful solutions, make informed trade-offs, and learn from every decision.

Product sense is not something you have.

It is something you practice.

And like any muscle, it grows stronger with every rep.
