High-Weightage IPMAT QA Topics Tracker
Frequently asked questions
What is quantitative aptitude in IPMAT?
Quantitative Aptitude (QA) is the mathematics section of IPMAT. In the IIM Indore exam, it appears in two formats — short-answer questions with no negative marking and multiple-choice questions with negative marking. Questions are drawn mainly from arithmetic, algebra, geometry and mensuration, and the number system, largely at the Class 10–12 level.
What is the IPMAT quantitative aptitude syllabus?
The IPMAT quantitative aptitude syllabus covers arithmetic (percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, averages, time and work, time–speed–distance, mixtures), algebra (linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, logarithms), number system, set theory, geometry and mensuration, permutation and combination, probability, and data interpretation. IIM does not release an official topic-wise syllabus, so the topic list is based on previous year papers.
What is the quantitative aptitude weightage in IPMAT?
As per the recent pattern, quantitative aptitude is the heaviest section — around 30 MCQs plus 15 short-answer questions out of 90, which is nearly half the paper. Within QA, arithmetic typically carries the largest share of questions, followed by algebra, number system, and geometry, which is why prioritising high-weightage topics first is a smart strategy.
How to prepare for quantitative aptitude for IPMAT?
Revise your maths basics from NCERT first, then move topic by topic — start with arithmetic since it carries the highest weightage, followed by algebra, number system, and geometry. Practise previous year IPMAT papers and timed sectional tests, and maintain a topic-wise tracker or error log so you always know which high-weightage topics still need work.
Where can I find good IPMAT quantitative aptitude questions for practice?
Previous year IPMAT papers and official sample papers are the best starting point because they reflect the actual difficulty and question style. You can supplement them with easy-to-moderate CAT-level QA questions, Class 11–12 NCERT problems, and mock test question banks.
Which is the best IPMAT quantitative aptitude book?
There is no single IPMAT-specific book that covers everything. Most aspirants build fundamentals with NCERT (Class 9–11) maths and then use a CAT-level QA book such as Arun Sharma's, since IPMAT QA is slightly easier than CAT. Always pair the book with IPMAT previous year papers and mocks.
How to start IPMAT preparation?
Start by understanding the exam pattern and the full syllabus, then attempt one previous year paper untimed as a diagnostic to identify your weak areas. Build a study plan that gives extra time to high-weightage QA topics, set a daily maths practice target, and add regular reading practice for verbal ability.
How much time is required to prepare for IPMAT?
Most successful candidates prepare for 6 to 12 months, studying around 2–4 hours a day alongside school. If you start later, 3–4 months of focused and consistent preparation — especially strong QA practice — can still be enough, but an earlier start reduces pressure.
When should I start preparing for IPMAT?
The ideal time is Class 11 or the beginning of Class 12, since the exam is usually held around April–May and school exams overlap with your preparation. That said, students who begin 6–9 months before the exam with a disciplined plan also perform well.
What is the best IPMAT preparation strategy?
Follow a three-phase plan: first build concepts section by section, then practise topic-wise questions and previous year papers, and finally move to full-length mocks with detailed analysis. Track your topic-wise accuracy in QA every week and revise your weakest high-weightage topics consistently.
Which IPMAT preparation books should I refer to?
For QA, use NCERT maths plus one CAT-level quantitative aptitude book; for verbal ability, use a good grammar and vocabulary resource along with daily reading comprehension practice. Add previous year papers and at least one mock test series, because books alone are not enough to crack IPMAT.
Is IPMAT preparation coaching necessary, or can I prepare on my own?
Coaching is not mandatory — a large number of students crack IPMAT through self-study. What matters is a structured plan, quality study material, regular mocks, and consistency. Many aspirants complete their entire IPMAT preparation online using lectures, question banks, and topic-wise trackers instead of joining a local coaching centre.
What is the IPMAT syllabus 2026?
The IPMAT syllabus for IIM Indore has three parts: Quantitative Ability short answer, Quantitative Ability MCQs, and Verbal Ability. QA includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number system, and related topics, while VA covers reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary. IIM does not publish a detailed official syllabus, so the 2026 syllabus is expected to remain in line with recent years, based on past papers.
Is there a separate IPMAT syllabus for PCB students?
No — the IPMAT syllabus for PCB students is the same as for everyone else, and they attempt the same QA section. The good news is that most QA questions are based on arithmetic and maths up to roughly the Class 10–11 level, so PCB students can absolutely manage it with regular, focused practice.
