What is Scrum?

The Scrum Team

A Scrum team is made up of three roles:

Product Owner: The Product Owner is the person who decides what features should be built.
Scrum Master: The Scrum Master is the facilitator who helps the team stay on track.
Developers: The Developers are the people who build the product.

What is a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master is a servant leader who helps the team be successful. They do this by:

Facilitating Scrum events
Removing impediments
Coaching the team on Scrum practices
Protecting the team from distractions

Characteristics of a Scrum Master

A good Scrum Master has the following characteristics:

Servant leadership: They put the needs of the team first.
Facilitation skills: They are able to lead effective meetings and discussions.
Conflict resolution skills: They are able to resolve conflicts in a constructive way.
Coaching skills: They are able to help the team members to improve their skills and knowledge.
Technical expertise: They have a good understanding of Agile and Scrum practices.

What is a Product Owner?

A Product Owner is responsible for defining the product and its features. They do this by creating a product backlog, which is a prioritized list of all the work that needs to be done on the product.

What is a Developer?

Developers are responsible for building the product. They do this by working together in cross-functional teams to deliver working software at the end of each sprint.

The Scrum Events

There are five Scrum events:

Sprint Planning: The team plans the work that will be done during the next sprint.
Daily Scrum: The team meets every day to discuss their progress and challenges.
Sprint Review: The team demonstrates the work they have completed during the sprint.
Sprint Retrospective: The team reflects on the sprint and identifies ways to improve their performance.
Sprint: A Sprint is a time-boxed iteration in Scrum where a team works on a specific set of tasks to deliver a potentially shippable product increment

What is a Daily Scrum?

The Daily Scrum is a short meeting that the team holds every day. During the Daily Scrum, each team member reports on their progress since the last Daily Scrum.

What is a Sprint Review?

A Sprint Review is a meeting where the team demonstrates the work they have completed during the sprint. The team invites stakeholders to the Sprint Review to get their feedback on the work.

What is a Sprint Retrospective?

A Sprint Retrospective is a meeting where the team reflects on the sprint and identifies ways to improve their performance. The team discusses what went well during the sprint, what went wrong, and what they can do differently next time.

The Scrum Artifacts

There are three Scrum artifacts:

Product Backlog: A prioritized list of all the work that needs to be done on the product.
Sprint Backlog: A list of the work that the team plans to do during the next sprint.
Sprint Increment: An increment is a potentially shippable product increment. It is a piece of work that can be released to customers.
