About me

Alumnus of Indiana University, Indiana, United States, with a Masters degree in Computer Science and professional work experience of ~13 years working in the United States and India, specializing in software architecture and design, development and implementation, and high performance and scalable platforms. Currently working as a Senior Software Engineer at Microsoft Azure within the Azure Service Fabric group. Azure Service Fabric is at the heart of Microsoft's cloud infrastructure, powering pivotal services such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Teams, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure SQL, among others. In this current role, I am deeply involved in architecting, developing, and optimizing the core components of Service Fabric. Prior to this, worked with Expedia Group to develop payment ecosystem that processes over USD 100 billions using micro-services built on Java/Spring/Springboot running on AWS to process payments in 200 currencies in 180 countries worldwide. Graduate coursework:- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Advanced Operating Systems, Mobile Computing, Data Mining, Social Media Mining, Data Semantics, Advanced Algorithms, Malware Threat and Security

Frequently asked questions

How to prepare for a system design interview?

Start with the core building blocks — load balancing, caching, database sharding, message queues, replication, and CAP trade-offs — since almost every problem is a combination of these. Then practise 10–15 classic problems like a URL shortener, chat app, or rate limiter using a fixed framework: clarify requirements, estimate scale, draw the high-level design, deep-dive components, and discuss bottlenecks. Reading builds concepts, but the real gap for most candidates is articulating trade-offs under time pressure, so do a few mock HLD interviews with a senior engineer before the actual round.

What are the most common system design interview questions?

The classics repeat across companies: design a URL shortener, WhatsApp, an Instagram/Twitter feed, a Netflix-style video platform, Uber, a rate limiter, a distributed message queue, and a web crawler. Interviewers keep changing the constraints — users, data volume, latency — so memorising one solution does not work. Learn the underlying patterns (caching, sharding, queues, consistency) and practise sketching each design in 35–40 minutes.

Which system design interview book should I read?

Alex Xu's two-volume System Design Interview set is the most widely recommended starting point — the first book covers fundamentals and classic systems, the second goes into more advanced, real-world designs. For deeper fundamentals, Designing Data-Intensive Applications is the usual next step. Use books to build concepts, then validate understanding by solving unseen problems in timed mock HLD sessions.

What is Grokking the System Design Interview?

Grokking the System Design Interview is a popular online course that breaks system design into repeatable patterns and walks through classic problems step by step. It is a good way to pick up a structured approach if you do not have one yet. That said, courses alone rarely get people through the round — you still need to design systems yourself and talk through trade-offs aloud, ideally with feedback from a mock interview.

How to crack a software engineer interview?

Work backwards from the round structure: most product companies test DSA and problem solving, system or object-oriented design, and behavioural fit. Build depth in each — consistent practice on medium-level problems, clear design thinking, and 4–5 prepared stories with measurable impact in STAR format. The biggest differentiator is realistic practice: timed mock coding and design interviews expose gaps in communication and pacing that self-study misses.

How to crack the Google software engineer interview?

Google interviews lean heavily on problem-solving depth: expect two coding rounds where you must reason aloud, analyse complexity, and optimise iteratively, plus system design for senior roles and a Googleyness behavioural round. Practise mediums and hards across arrays, graphs, and dynamic programming, and get comfortable coding without an IDE. Since hiring decisions go through a hiring committee, structured mock interviews with honest scoring help you gauge whether you are genuinely at the bar.

What kind of software engineer interview questions should I expect?

Expect four broad buckets: DSA (arrays, strings, trees, graphs, dynamic programming), system design or LLD depending on experience, CS fundamentals like OS, DBMS, and networks — still commonly asked in India — and behavioural questions around your projects. Freshers face heavier DSA and project-based questioning, while experienced engineers get more design and architecture depth. Prepare quantified project stories, because almost every interviewer digs into what you have actually built.

What does the software engineer interview process look like?

A typical flow at product companies: application or referral, an online assessment with 2–4 coding questions, one or two technical screens, a virtual onsite loop covering coding, design, and behavioural rounds, then hiring committee review and HR discussion. Service-based companies and startups often compress this into fewer rounds. Timelines range from a week to over a month, so prepare in a way that lets you schedule multiple companies close together.

How to write a software engineer resume?

Lead with impact, not responsibilities — every bullet should follow an action + technology + measurable result pattern, for example "reduced API latency by 40% by introducing Redis caching." Tailor keywords from the job description so it clears ATS filters, keep it to one page for early career and two pages for senior roles, and put your strongest achievements first. Most self-written resumes undersell real impact, so get the draft reviewed by someone senior before applying.

How to format a software engineer resume?

Use a single-column, ATS-friendly layout in reverse-chronological order with clear sections: contact details, experience, skills, projects, and education. Stick to one readable font, consistent bullets, and a PDF export, and avoid photos, tables, graphics, and two-column templates that parsers misread. Whether you build it in Word, Google Docs, or Overleaf, formatting should support the content — recruiters spend under 30 seconds on the first scan.

Which software engineer resume template should I use?

Pick a clean, single-column, ATS-safe template — hiring software at most companies cannot reliably parse tables, columns, icons, or unusual section headers. A good template has clear headings, consistent dates, and enough whitespace to be skimmed in seconds. Skip the flashy designs floating around on template galleries; recruiters and hiring managers consistently prefer simple, well-structured resumes that put content first.

Where can I find a good software engineer resume sample?

Look for samples that match your experience level — a resume for 2 years of experience looks very different from one for 10 years, where scope, leadership, and system-level impact matter more than coursework. The best samples come from engineers who have actually cleared interviews at product companies, not generic template sites. Use them to study bullet framing and structure, then adapt the thinking to your own metrics instead of copying text.

What should a software engineer resume for freshers include?

With no full-time experience, lead with education, then projects, internships, and skills. Recruiters hiring freshers look for proof that you can build: two or three solid projects with links, the specific tech stack used, and outcomes such as users, accuracy, or performance gains. Include competitive programming ranks, CGPA if strong, and internships with quantified contributions. One page, evidence-driven, and tailored to the role beats boilerplate like "hardworking team player" every time.

How do I write a strong SOP for an MS in Computer Science?

A strong SOP answers three things convincingly: why this field, shown through specific academic or project experiences rather than childhood stories; why this particular university, naming courses, professors, or labs you have researched; and what your career plan is after graduation. Admissions committees read thousands of generic essays, so concrete specifics matter far more than adjectives. Draft it early and get it reviewed by someone who has already been through the US MS route — outside eyes catch generic lines you have become blind to.

What is the difference between HLD and LLD interviews?

HLD (high-level design) interviews test whether you can architect an entire system — components, data flow, storage choices, and scaling trade-offs. LLD (low-level design) zooms into one component and tests object-oriented thinking: classes, interfaces, design patterns, and clean, extensible code, usually for problems like a parking lot or a BookMyShow-style system. Mid and senior loops in India commonly include both, and they use different muscles, so prepare for each with separate practice rather than treating them as one skill.
